Trip Advice Anyone.

Postby troutwiz on Tue Jul 27, 2010 10:55 am

Its my birthday this friday and within the next few days I have the option of fishing anywhere I want the next few days. I was thinking the west branch of the Delaware would be a really fun trip. Mind the fact that I can only travel 2-3 hours out of state. Any advice where I should go?

Well a tailwater is basically your only choice or a limestoner. The good PA ones may be out of your range so the Delaware tailwaters are a good choice. You getting your license this year?

I fished the WB yesterday, floated it in fact. It is fishing well as trout fishing goes in late July. Sulphurs were the main hatch with olives, light Cahills, Golden Drakes (Potomanthus) and a couple Isos about. This weekend's weather is looking better for trout fishing up there, but you won't have the river to yourself as it is one of the few around we can fish right now. But it won't be crowded either. Good luck if you get up there and happy B-day!

Within 2-3 hours of Sparta area right?

WB Delaware, (Big) Fishing Creek in Lamar, Pa (not Benton, there are two fishing creeks.), or Esopus. WB is good but can be difficult to get around and know where to go for your first time. Fishing Creek is wild trout and if you fish the Narrows you have about 5 continuous miles that you can fish. You could park, or get dropped off and just start following up the stream all day then walk out to the road and walk back down to where you parked or were dropped off. That's what I do out there, pack a lunch and just start fishing my up stream and enjoying the scenery.
Oh I am just a vagabond, a drifter on the run. And eloquent profanity it rolls right off my tonque. And I have dined in palaces, drunk wine with Kings and Queens. But darlin', oh darlin you're the best thing I've ever seen.

Central or Southern PA limestones (Fishing Creek, Yellow Breeches, etc.) if you can manage the drive time, otherwise Delaware Watershed tailwaters.

Didn't say trout - the Delaware has been fishing well for smallies this year. I have been fishing between Foul Rift and the Delaware Water Gap, but have heard good things about upriver too. Weekdays are best since the canoe/tube/raft hatch has been heavy this year.

Flies right now for Big Fishing Creek in Lamar, PA:

BWO's #16-20 (or Parachute Pheasant Tails)
Blue Quills #16-18
Slate Drakes(Isonychias) #10-12
Sulphurs, Cahills #14-18
Tan Caddis #14-16
Parachute Adams #14-20

Nymphs: Pheasant tails and Princes or Zug Bugs #14-18

Emergers: Iso emergers #10-12, RS2 #16-20, Sparkle Caddis emergers #14-16

If it's an overcast morning throw BWO's or a Parachute PT. Nymph or try tan cadis trailed by the sparkle emerger in the middle of the afternoon. If you are there late afternoon into evening it can be a good idea to start blind casting the big Slate Drakes-its fun and can draw some exceptional strikes. There are two bridges (and a hatchery near each one) about 5 miles apart and it's rural and heavily wooded but you won't ever be too far from the road through the Narrows in case you get into trouble (if you work upstream the road will always be on your left) Most of it is public but several miles upstream you will start to run into the "cabin water" which is private but public access to the stream only is allowed (cabin water is closed to the public on Sundays.) You can fish all day or weekend here and not get bored, fish are everywhere here but they aren't too easy. The tribs are good wild brookie water.

What kind of high horses are you all riding? He didn't post any info that isn't in the reg book or on the release website. He didn't post any specific spots nor did he say whether it was loaded with fish. The Mongaup isn't easy to fish, that post isn't going to attract the hordes. Just to be a dick, I think I might just post GPS coordinates though of hotspots on others' favorite trout streams! Why? Because I just like to be a dick sometimes and I can!
