Northern New Mexico

Postby BiggerThomas on June 18th, 2017, 1:03 pm

Our family vacation this summer will be to the foothills of Santa Fe, New Mexico. We booked a pequeña casa near the Santa Fe National Forest.

I have the NM fly fishing guide book but I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a stream they've personally enjoyed.

Thanks, and Happy Father's Day to all the Dads.

I Go out West every year. I love to fish and history. I always read an historical book before I go to help get even more psyched about the trip. I am presently reading Blood and Thunder by Hampton Sides. Not wild about his writing style, but lots of good info regarding that part of the West. I am addicted to books about the Indian Wars and especially about the Mountain Men.

I'm composing this report from the foothills of Santa Fe, New Mexico, where I'm vacationing for two weeks with my family.

My wife and I took our two boys into the Santa Fe National Forest today. The beauty of the place is arresting and the dry-fly fishing is superb. Nowhere I've fished before even lends itself to comparison.

We first drove up along the Pecos River in that town. Beautiful pocket water, flats, runs, undercuts, tons of hatches--you name it. It's an angler's dream. I laced up my 9 ft 4 wt Elkhorn rod with a bushy EHC #16 and that's about all she wrote. Mostly wild browns with a few 'bows thrown in.

We continued to drive north up Rt 63 to Holy Ghost Creek, a small trib to the Pecos. More wild browns and brilliant scenery. Same EHC #16.

While the Pecos and HGC were both fantastic, my favorite of the day was the Panchuela, another trib to the Pecos that's even further north than HGC. The Panchuela is the most picturesque stream I've ever been on. From 5 o'clock pm until about 5:45pm, the wild brown action was non-stop. Same EHC #16.

My wife and boys all caught fish, too.

Below are a few shots but of course they don't do reality justice. Tomorrow, I'm hoping to hit a stream with wild cuts.

Good snag for a family vacation. Post more stream pics when you can. Looks like a great adventure.
