TU Spring Event, March 13th

Postby Ryan R on Wed Mar 10, 2010 5:03 pm

On Saturday March 13th, the Lehigh Valley Chapters of Trout Unlimited will host its annual Spring Event. This year noted Poconos flyfisher and stream entimologist Don Baylor will present a program on "Fishing the Pocono Streams" at Stockertown Rod & Gun Club off Lefevre Road in Stockertown, PA. A great raffle with numerous prizes will be held including a kids-only raffle. Coffee, Juice, and Donuts will be available. The program is free and open to the public. Doors Open at 9AM, the program begins at 10AM.

I will likely be there. I'm coming from Edison; anyone want to car pool? It's about 1 hour from my town.

Hmmm, with a pouring rain all day Saturday, this event just might be the hot ticket in town :)

Best of luck with it, sounds like a great day!

Yes. And I'll even buy the JTD coffee & a buttered roll.

If JTD promises to show up and introduce himself, I would consider canceling my trip to the Salmon River this weekend to attend. I should be attending anyway, as my chapter is hosting the event, but I haven't been able to make the last three meetings so I'm probably on the shit list.

Consider?!

That's a no brainer here. :? I'll call out of work Saturday to see JTD, but ONLY if he shows up in his Cholo Creature From The Barrio attire:

after all, he is JTD. He's like the GST version of The Stig in Top Gear.

I went to the Don Baylor talk this morning at the Stockertown Rod & Gun Club and it was well worth my time. The rain was heavy as I left Edison but as I went north and west, things got better--that's pretty much a rule of thumb the further one gets from NJ  Bill, I drove by your ‘hood and honked—did you hear me? 8-)

The event was well attended and many stood in the back due to lack of chairs (I would put the attendance at over 150?). There were donuts and coffee and a few raffles--I actually won some strike indicators in one of the raffles but I'm not crazy about this type so I'm willing to sell them to some needy bastard for twice their price. No, just kidding. I will give them to an organization to raffle off or to any angler if you're interested...I forget what kind they are and they're in my glove compartment right now. Any takers?

In short, I learned a lifetime's worth of streams to explore in the Poconos. Don is a former English teacher and made a real tight presentation on the history of the Brodhead region and the tribs feeding the Lehigh and Delaware Rivers. Great pictures of the trout he's caught too. He wrapped up with a list of "things to be concerned about" and "things to be optimistic about" regarding the futures of the fisheries in NE PA. He stressed that PA's new M.O. is "protect the resource" as compared to old ones, "educate the angler" or "stock the hell out of the streams." I don't know why those all can't work in concert--one by itself isn't going to last long IMO.

I was back for lunch, not a bad way to spend the morning.

Luckily for them I could not attend this year :D .
I have the past two years (08 & 09) and came away with the 50/50 both times.
I was looking forward to attending this year and making it three in a row ;) but Fly Tying class got in the way  .

Wow, we got over 150, that's a record I think. Previously we've topped off at about 125, we've averaged right at about 100. I think the seating capacity is only 150 in that building so I'm not surprised that many were standing. I guess with the rain more people chose to come than do other things. Glad you enjoyed the presentation. BTW, the little stream next to the hall is the Little Bushkill Creek- it's stocked and also has some wild reproduction but it has suffered several ills from development (sedimentation and water flow drops from an increase in wells taking from the aquifer.)

We've kicked around the idea of a bigger venue but that would definitely increase our cost and might force us to charge entry rather than present it free to the public. Since we've never completely reached the very limits of capacity and are committed to providing the program free we've kept it where it all began, at Stockertown.
