Classic Wets New Adiction

Postby leakywaders on Mon Mar 08, 2010 7:27 pm

Some Classic Wets I've been expirementing with trying out different wing materials. So many classic patterns to practice on makes for a nice break from the normal nymphs and dries.

Messed up the body on the Joe trying to press out a bump but it's all part of learning I guess. All tied on a Mustad 3906 #8

Thanks
tom for the help with the pic's I'll size even smaller next time

I have a Don Bastian dvd that I've watched and gotten some pointers from a few guys that tie these. You just have to give it a whirl its kind of fun and a departure from the norm for me. I want to fish some of them this year too. I heard you are in the tying clas at NJTU w/ Darren hows that going?

The class is great. For the most part, they're not new patterns to me, but I'm picking up some good tips with each class and that makes it well worth the time. Darren's a good teacher.

Finally you've found something to do while I'm hogging the hole. You and The OC can sit and tie classic wets instead of taking jabs at me and passing the flask back and forth on the bank behind me while I fish my dries and clean out the pool

I have the patience of Job. As if you didn't already know this :D And I always get them to eat eventually! 8-) I love tough, wild browns that get hammered all day and by some of the best. They are my Nirvana when I fool them.

It's a great addiction to have and they will catch fish. I have started tying colorful streamers and framing them in shadow boxes - its a nice diversion and looks great on the wall and can make a nice gift. I am currently tying 3 streamers to match the colors of the 3 colleges in my household - Boston College, Rutgers, and Wake Forest. Streamer fishing is the weakest part of my fly-fishing skills, but I do like the way they look.

Those wets look great! I love fishing traditional wets, and there are days when the old wets outfish the modern patterns. Swing that Royal Coachman when the water is a little murky and see who gets all the fish.

IMHO, the best way to get a smooth tinsel body is to first make sure the underbody is smooth. Then, start at the head and wind back, and then wind back to the head. The first layer may be rough, but the second one usually smooths right out.

Those wings look really, really good for someone claiming not to have tied many.

Thanks Jeff and I like the tip about the tinsel body I wrapped from the back forward and when I was done there was a little bump so when I was trying to press it out with my meat paws it slid and made it worse next one I will wrap from the front to back.

I did about 24 Leadwing coachmans for the TU swap and that's what got me wanting to try other patterns so I am a little new to the wings but have gotten alot of good tips from guys that tie these.

Classic's are cool but for me I'd rather tinker around and come up with something new but "EFFECTIVE".
But that's just me, they look good Dave keep it up.

Very nice ties indeed! You have to be commended if you are going to fish the duck quill wing flies like the royal coachman with any serious consistency. They get destroyed so fast. I gave up on them a long time ago because if it. You are a better man than I. How about a "Queen of the Waters". A very good one with a decent degree of difficulty that is really a good fish catcher. ;)

To be quite frank,I have not tied one in a while and I'm sure it would look like it had been through a rodeo if I attempted it! I'm not the tyer I used to be. If you are up for it, give it a whirl, it's a good one!

Nice work indeed! :D
