I can't remember where I read or heard this, but the reason fish caught in winter or through the ice taste better is because they have a higher fat content which makes the meat richer. Makes sense, just like you want some fat in your beef.

I think the answer depends on whether you are relaxed and enjoying your time at the vise. If trying to tie faster is not relaxing and the flies you turn out when doing that are not to your liking, that's no fun. And these caddis and their cousins that will be coming off the rivers shortly, B. Numerosus , live for up to 4 weeks. So its good to carry #14-18 dark caddis dries through late May in NJ. Also, when the water temps reach the upper 50's low 60's the grannoms will come back to the water in the evening...

Yo, caddisflies also have two set of wings; the difference is that caddis wings sit like a tent over the abdomen, and stonefly wings sit flat over the abdomen.
