School Me on Sucker Spawn Flies
Been seeing a lot of posts lately on Facebook, etc. of good sized trout being caught on sucker spawn flies. I'm not familiar at all with this type of fly, I guess it's an egg pattern? I've never fished anything resembling an egg pattern, so I'm looking for a general education on how to use them. Loo...

Re: Warmth Under Waders
I wear Kuhl Deceptr pants under my waders (and in everyday life). Much more comfortable than jeans. Probably won't keep you warm if the temp is noticeably cold, but they are very comfortable and there's a lot of flex/stretch in the material. The fabric is also water resistant. I've worn them under w...

Re: Need a Crash Course on Spring Flies
Great info from everyone, thanks! Another rookie question... is there any sort of consensus on what rod line/size to use on these NJ streams? I know you can probably use just about anything, but curious what others use. I have a 7’6” 3-wt glass rod, a “softer” 9’-0” 5-wt, and a “faster” 9’-0” 6-wt. ...

Need a Crash Course on Spring Flies
Per the title. Excited to get out this spring and fish, but I’ve never trout fished NJ rivers before. Primarily looking at the Musky, if it matters. I know there are hatch charts, but I figure the crowd here has the experience to know what works and doesn’t. I’m not after anyone’s secret recipe or a...

Re: Recommend a 3wt for Bluegill
More I read up on different options, more I'm leaning toward fiberglass, especially since this rod is only going to have one purpose, so I don't mind it being a bit of a novelty. Hopefully I'll be able to try some out before buying, though, since I've never casted glass and I'm sure it's a lot diffe...

Re: Recommend a 3wt for Bluegill
Thanks for the responses so far. I know next to nothing about fiberglass, but the Redington Butter Stick II did seem like something that would interest me for this particular need. The price tag on that is pretty appealing also (again, not knowing much about the fiberglass market and what is high en...

Recommend a 3wt for Bluegill
Per the title... Started lake fishing last year, and I’m all set as far as bass setups. I started catching a lot of bluegill along the banks, and I really enjoyed it. But the lightest rod/line I have is a 5wt - I’d like to move to a 3wt dedicated to bluegill, these fish are not big by any stretch. W...

Re: Paulins Kill - Are There Fish in This Section?
Ok, let's just take this down. I don't want to this left up if I'm asking the wrong questions. Was just curious.
I'd do it myself but the option to edit or delete the original post doesn't seem to be available.

Paulins Kill - Are There Fish in This Section?
004BF212-C8A7-4127-9652-FD5CECEBE7C6.jpeg Walked a relatively short stretch of the Paulins Kill Valley Trail this morning. Started at the lake near the Blairstown Water Department, and turned around once I reached Spring Valley Road. An elementary school level map Is attached showing my path. First...

What Flies Do You Throw on Top for Bass?
I've started lake fishing this year (small-ish 65-acre lake in the Poconos, fishing from a 14' flat bottom boat). Largemouth, crappie, bluegill, pickerel are all found in the particular lake I fish, and while I've caught a couple on spinning gear, I still find it way more enjoyable to cast a fly tha...

Re: Good luck and have fun tomorrow
I went for a hike this morning in the Black River State Park. I didn’t realize it was opening day... in my travels, I walked past no less than 20 people occupying a single 200 yard stretch where the river turns along State Park Road. Not a single person had more than 100 square feet of river themsel...

Re: Late spring - summer fly fishing
For those that have to take a drive to get to the South Branch or Musky, Shannon's posts the water temp from the morning on the South Branch on their web site which will give you an idea. They don't do it every day but it has helped me several times to decide whether to take the drive of over an ho...

Re: Late spring - summer fly fishing
The Musky was 64 degrees along Rt. 57 this morning, FYI (at the banks, i didn’t step in). Saw a couple guys fishing the bridges off Rt. 57 and a few more at the one lane bridge of the Point Mountain TCA.
Still a lot of good looking water in my fairly uneducated opinion.

Re: Late spring - summer fly fishing
Glad someone asked about this - I’m fairly new myself in that I’ve fly fished before, but only on numerous vacations out west in Montana. I’m looking to start fishing locally on a more regular basis. When I fished the Missouri River, it was 95 degrees in the middle of July, and it was a zoo of peopl...
