Re: A conversation with the new Chief of Freshwater Fisheries regarding spring stocking

Good, now we have to hope for heavy rain and high water during the preseason closed waters to spread them out. I pray for this each and every yr during stocking periods....a few times in the last ten yrs conditions for optimal spread was good and made for a nice prolonged period of lots of fish alm...

Re: A conversation with the new Chief of Freshwater Fisheries regarding spring stocking

There will be one minor deviation from the 'usual' spring stocking schedule. In an effort to head off any potential staffing shortage issues due to illness that might possibly arise during the stocking period that would adversely impact getting the fish from the hatchery into the waters, an addition...

Re: WMA closings

That's a shame that the division was against it because it's really not closing down that much water. I could understand that the CO's would have a lot more to do though. You have to realize that only Montana has these temperature related river closures and that is the only state that also does not...

Re: Pa brown coughs up its last meal...

Not at all surprising. A few years ago I watched a big brown in the big pool at the bottom of the upper glen nab an approx 8-9 inch rainbow and casually swim around with it in his mouth until it was dead and then turn it to swallow it head first. Took about 15-20 minutes for the whole process, very ...

Re: Is Facebook Killing Trout?

First off let me clear up that I had nothing to do with the article, just thought it and some of the other pieces on the included website would be interesting. That aside, I agree that most members on here would cause far less post angling mortality than this piece would indicate, based mainly on ho...

Is Facebook Killing Trout?

Here's an article written by a young woman named Shannon White. She's a grad student at Penn State majoring in freshwater biology and specifically focusing on wild/native brook trout. She has led and/or participated in some major studies on Pa's native brookie waters with a strong focus on the Loyal...

Seriously? No idea where in Gods name you heard such nonsense but no, that is the furthest from the truth. The Div website has all the detailed info. Stocking is and has been going on, and at present there are no plans to alter in-season stocking either.

That little stream has had natural reproducing browns for way over 50 years, FYI. This guy knows whats up. NJ has only 30-ish officially designated Wild Trout Streams but nearly 200 Trout Production streams. I wonder what makes them "official" I figure some of it has to do with public access. Altho...

Re: Public Meeting on Trout Stocking Program February 29

Sounds like they had lots of hair brained ideas in the 70s and 80s! My good friend's dad worked for the department with Bob S back at that time. There was a plan to introduce lake run/steelhead trout into the Mulhockaway so that there would be a run of fish out of the reservoir. My friend's dad sai...

Re: Public Meeting on Trout Stocking Program February 29

I'm all for tree planting. The Raritan river either has huge 200 year old trees or nothing it seems. I think in those areas the soil is more easily eroded way. More red shale. or whatever that rock is called. The trees get more easily uprooted. I think farming practices in that art of the state con...

Re: nj brookies... ever again?

So they order take out for LasndLocked, so 3 lakes can benefit. Why not order Brown trout instead so the WHOLE STATE can benefit, oh yeah, that make too much sense. The reason NJ gets landlocked salmon from Massachusetts is because we used to supply them with brown trout eggs. Although we no longer...

Re: Big Flatbrook No Kill section

Curious, were any of the rainbows still attempting to spawn? When they were stocked a week ago Thu many of them immediately paired up and began clear spawning activity in the gravel shallows. This behavior lasted at least through last weekend, I was just curious if they had finally settled down.

Anything with a limestone influence would be your best bet right now. The Bushkill around Allentown, the mid to lower Musky, etc.

Re: Stream Assessments

Somewhat off topic - The Division just hired a great new fisheries biologist, Garret Kratina. He was a seasonal employee here in NJ this summer for TU. They have added a few new biologists the last few years as retirements have cropped up. That's great news! We certainly need some new blood and mor...

Re: Stream Assessments

The biologists covering the trout streams spent large portions of 2015, '16, and '17 surveying all of the listed and other known WTS's. That work is what prompted the changes to the list in the 2018 regs. As Brian mentioned the Freshwater Fisheries Bureau is currently revising the entire Freshwater ...

Derek always was and still is a very good guy! He definitely connected well with many of the old regulars on NJTrout, myself included. Denis F. gave him his first ever 'boo rod. Re: Natirar smallmouth fishing

Bob, sounds about right for that water. We electro shocked it one summer and found no trout and mostly smaller sized smallies and various chubs, dace, sunfish, etc. It lacks decent holding water and there was some talk at one time about river restoration and enhancement project with the county, but...

Permit applications go in later this week.....
Good to hear! It's a shame the wheels of progress turn so agonizingly slow at times! Hopefully there'll be no glitches in permitting and the project can continue to move forward at a decent pace.
