First Brook trout

A friend and I were able to hook and land out first wild brook trout. With some simple research, we found a stream that exclusively supports brook trout. While we had some hit and nibble at the jigs with 1 inch grubs, the few brookies we hooked came on very tiny 1/80th oz jigs with some black marabo...

Raritan main stem tributary trout. holdovers?

Unexpectedly Caught two nice rainbows in middle brook (main stem middle brook). About 2000 ft upstream from confluence with main stem Raritan. It's stocked in the spring up in East Branch. However only fall stocking would be 9 miles upstream the raritan in n/s branches. Holdover? Or Stocked trout fr...

Re: Black River Road

I heard from a local while fishing around about "j+j Johnson" too , and to take those flint hill preserve signs seriously cause they can be defensive. I was able to stay away from those signs, the township owns some land on the black river, look for those signs that say "no hunting but fishing with ...

Re: Skunk Cabbage

Ive seen the same lil shoots of skunk cabbage too recently myself. But its not uncommon for me, I would see skunk cabbage all around the woods while hiking back in the years. If it gets warm enough I guess they sprout a bit, but not open up until spring. Good place to hike and fish btw! I like that ...

Re: Day On The River With My Son

If you dont see immediate interest with your kids in fishing, give it time. My dad took me out a few times as a kid. Took me years later to actually get into fishing. Just randomly one day wanted to, I think having my own car helped with that. I think ways that my dad could have done better showing ...

Re: Rhinehart Brook brown trout removal...

@NJangler They're trying to divide streams into three different classifications, Native Brook trout streams, Wild brown Enhancement streams, and the combination of the two, just called 'wild trout streams'. The later two classifications are going to be left alone, they want a healthy population of t...

Re: South Branch Advise

"funny looking orange fish" That fish was a Palomino aka; Golden Trout. If you look at Shannon's web site video on the Bubba stocking, you see that they are putting in a few. They don't breed. Finicky so I don't target them however fish right around them because there is usually a rainbow or brown ...

Re: South Branch Advise

I took a trip to califon / long valley south branch today, two nice trout from deep pool but also had 3 fish swipe out of no-where in fast water. Didnt happen to stick or land any of the surprise hits. All rainbows. Also saw some funny looking orange fish swimming around that I couldnt entice. Proba...

Re: Rhinehart Brook brown trout removal...

Im Guessing f&w will continue this project to other 'Brook Trout Dominant' streams? Cant speak for other streams, but Rhinehart Brook is not a great brown trout destination. It's just a creek and in terms of brown trout fishing it's no better than the other lil creeks plentiful over the state. There...

Re: Rhinehart Brook brown trout removal...

Thanks for the info , rusty spinner. I heard other rumors that the fish were killed and never heard anything about other streams. I guess at the fisheries forum next month more things will be clear. I wonder what options we have to make one of the preexisting waterfalls less passable. Maybe voluntee...
