Re: Nature Open for Business - Wild Brookies

Needless to say, its getting weird out there.... However, the fish are none the wiser and if you have the time, go fishing!! I took a drive yesterday and hit up a tiny wild brookie stream. Very tiny! Inches deep in most spots and a low gradient so the fish are spooky and mostly hidden in undercut b...

Re: Good hatch and rising trout

Nice fish! I was out yesterday for most of the day. Saw so many hatches, but didn't manage to catch a single trout...

Re: Shad Fishing

I am actually hoping to go for the first time this year. One of my friends lives along the river and said he'll let me know when he starts seeing them. I'll post what I learn here as well. But in the meantime I can share the title of a book by Princeton professor John McPhee that tells the story of...

Shad Fishing

Do you all get out and shad fish a lot? Do you have any recommendations for line weight and lures (other than shad darts)? I have never been out before and I am thinking about giving it a shot this year on the Delaware.

Re: Coorelation of temps and bite in winter

I went fishing out on Sunday when it was 37 degrees, cloudy, and very windy. I did not get a single bite the entire day.

I definitely agree with you coaltrout; I see much more success with temps around >40 and sunshine

Re: Who Uses a Net?

I always use a net. I find it is easier to safely remove the hook without harming the fish. It also allows me to keep the fish in the water while I take my phone out so I can take a quick picture (which I'd say I do about 90% of the time just for fun).

50 Degrees Saturday

Weather was 50 degrees and rainy on Saturday so I decided to go out in the afternoon for a few hours before dark. First hook up of the day was this rainbow, and was one of the bigger rainbows I have ever caught in NJ. He was about the size of my net (which I meant to measure and completely forgot). ...

Nice pics. Heading up this weekend.
Good luck! The steelhead seemed to want natural colors this year. I was catching them on a 10 mm orange egg bead. Tight Lines!!!

Salmon River: 10/30-11/3

Went up to the Salmon River last week for our annual fishing trip. Wednesday and Thursday were slow, but solid fishing. I managed to land about 12 steelhead between the 2 days. One of which included my personal best, 17 lb steelhead. A lot of browns are in the river. All caught on an orange salmon e...

Re: Flyfishing Catskills

I used to fish Charlotte Creek in the 1970s. Just about any fly worked so well that I had to relearn fishing if I went elsewhere. I kept count once, 20 brookies in an hour while standing in the same spot. Has it changed? Thanks for all responses guys. I appreciate the help. And Pete, that's great t...

Flyfishing Catskills

I have recently started fly fishing in NJ only about 2 years ago so I am still pretty new to the sport (new to GST as well). I consider myself successful fishing in NJ for stockies, but when I head upstate NY (my family has property in the Oneonta area in Davenport) I struggle to catch fish. The mai...
