Re: bows

Believe it or not--and those who know me will--when I fish certain wild streams, I approach the bank in an army crawl manner, for two reasons. One, the vibrations you make when you walk can scare trepidatious trout; distributing that shock load over four points instead of two mutes the strength & re...

Re: bows

If someone recognizes the stream from a photograph of a rock or pool, then it's identity is already known. I agree: visually , if you recognize it, it's already known to you. Explore on your own. These places are not hard to find if you do the leg work yourself. Please be courteous and not name nam...

Re: Public Meeting on Trout Stocking Program February 29

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife will be holding its annual trout stocking meeting at the Pequest Trout Hatchery on Saturday, February 29, at 10:00 a.m. This important meeting provides an excellent opportunity for anglers to ask questions, voice their opinions, and give suggestions regarding...

Re: WTS 1/30

That depends on the conditions..if there is a hatch going on and fish are on the bugs, not even power bait will catch them..well sometimes, but I guarantee, I will catch more on the bugs hatching than any spin set-up...everytime. That ain't wrong , But what do I know Do I sense a "fish-off" brewing...

Re: WTS 1/30

One of the old members of this board, Bill H, used to buy the crappiest equipment he could find. He wanted none of the advantages new or cutting-edge equipment could offer an angler; if he caught trout (and he usually did), it was all him. Is there a big difference between cutting edge vs crap? I f...

Re: Tiger Trout

I've caught several stocked tigers, but still no wild tigers in my 47 years fly fishing. Nice fish, LU. Im empty in both scenarios. Hope if i hit more brookie-like water in a brown trout stream i can find a wild one. From my understanding theyll be around where brookies are dominate in a stretch wh...

Re: WTS 1/30

That looks like the WTS I fish mostly. It also has had a huge drop off in numbers over the past few years. I haven't seen any real rebound at all yet, but I don't fish there as much as there are few trout. One guy who lives upstream told me they are rebounding a bit , but we will see. Is the "guy w...

Re: Tiger Trout

Nice winter treat, old boy. In addition to their exotic vermiculation, I've always thought of them as kind of otherworldly since they're also sterile.

Re: Little Black Stoneflies

I would assume that if the weather is correct and we have mid 50's Mon and Tues the LBS's will be coming off. If all goes as plan i will be hitting the Pequannock in some old and new spots. Got that right Joe. I hope to find some stream time next week as well. I haven't had spring fever like this i...

There are different Little black stones that hatch or crawl to the bank at different sizes . I believe the smaller ones start earlier .
Makes sense.

ps Would the adult ones float if they fell off a snowbank into the stream? I wonder if fishing them on top would be effective.

The black stoneflies in this video are pretty big--maybe a 12 or bigger?

Little Black Stoneflies

Saturday will mark the 1st of February. For me, the appearance of those little pod-looking creatures crawling on a white snowbank always marked the beginning of the fly fishing season. Has anyone seen any LBS this year? I've seen them as early as Valentine's Day.

The Patch by John McPhee--a short story about fishing and a father

If you are a fan of pickerel, you might enjoy this story by Princeton professor John McPhee. In about 10 mins, he intertwines a fishing outing with the death of his father:

Re: New Mexico

Bubba, my family vacationed in Santa Fe two years ago. What beautiful country. The Rio Grande (about 18 miles west of Santa Fe) can be interesting if you're willing to cross some serious terrain. Here is a video by Nick Streit, one of the guides out there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CslFVCHOt9Y...
