Re: South Branch Advise

Speaking of the Raritan and kayaks, I have been thinking about launching from Donaldson Park in Highland Park and kayaking (or, yakking, perhaps? It is the latter half of the Raritan after all  ) down to Perth Amboy where the river enters the Bay. Anyone ever do this section of it?

Skunk Cabbage

We took a family hike the other day to find the headwaters of the North Branch of the Raritan. Along the walk, I started noticing skunk cabbage--tightly wound still, not opened yet, but it was there. I've known skunk cabbage as a harbinger of spring; but in early January? Does anyone know if skunk c...

Great shots. The best ones are with family imo.

I am looking forward to taking my sons this spring. They are 8 and 10.

Re: South Branch Advise

I'm relatively new to fly fishing and the only section of the South Branch I have fished is the Ken Lockwood Gorge. Would someone share with me other sections of the river that can be fished successfully during the winter months? Thank you. Look for deep water or pools, as trout hang out there more...

Re: Little Lehigh Fly Shop

Going back many years, I remember a guy named Rod who used to own the shop. If I recall, he was an investment banker or something like that? He would often be in there with the wood stove going. I guess he sold it to this other fellow Dave? I'm out of the loop

Re: South branch fishable flows?

What do you guys think the maximum cfs is to be able to fish the gorge? When the rivers are high and swollen, I fish with a wading stick (usually any sturdy branch I can find stream-side). I rest the branch on a nearby rock or hang it from a tree limb while I'm casting. It gives me some peace of mi...

All good advice given.

Any recos on winter dries to use?
I've had luck with small (#18-#24) midges and BWOs. And I make it a lunch-time outing between 11-3 so I can hit the warmest part of the day....

Plus it never hurts if a crumb or two from my sandwich lands in a feeding lane :D

Re: Winter nymphing advice

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I enjoy dry fly fishing in the winter. That means I don't fish too often in the winter, but if I'm going out this time of year and standing in very cold water, I want the added excitement of catching a trout on a dry fly. I try to find days when it's sunny and...

Re: The Green Brook 12/5/18:

Great job on the cleanup. What many don't understand is how all that garbage got into the river in the first place. This is NOT people tossing trash into the river or very, very little of it is that. This is when your recycling can gets blown over by the wind and your plastics get blown into local ...

Re: Raritan Headwaters meeting 12/1/18:

This RHS conference sounds interesting and now I'm thinking I'd like to attend others (or do you need a membership?). Non-profits like RHA, TU, etc. must allow the general public to attend any open meetings, so the answer is no, you don't need to be a member. But please consider joining as my firm ...

Re: The Green Brook 12/5/18:

Early season during the trout stocking I have a lot of fun catching trout on the fly in the upper section and throw them all back and the people look at you funny when you throw them. People look at you funny when you throw the fish back? How hard are you throwing them, Mike? But I hear you; ...

Mostly rainbows.
That fly is great, I used it under a FBPT but all fish were caught with the midge.
What's a FBPT? I guessing some pheasant tail variant.

I understand stocking ponds in southern Jersey.

But don't get why northern ponds do when there's prime trout streams just next door.
Might be a matter of access for handicapped/older anglers. Just a guess.
