Re: How many flies do you fish on a nymph rig

Two, but the second fly might not be a nymph.

Re: I'm officially a chest guy

Field test it ...
Some people love them, but I found it very annoying.
It kept getting in the way of my rod/reel handling.
IMHO:
If your skinny, it's like being fat.
If you're fat, it's like being even fatter.
I now use it to store extra flies in the truck.

Re: It was WORK & was worth it

About the "grump" ... He may have mistaken you for a spot jumper. Courtesy among trout fly fishers normally calls for giving each other plenty of room. See: http://www.uky.edu/~agrdanny/flyfish/rules.htm On a crowded stream this can be relaxed, sometimes to the point of agreeing to share a large poo...

Fishermen are supposed to stink.

Re: Recommend a 3wt for Bluegill

Personally, although I'm uncomfortable fishing a six foot (or shorter) fly rod, I've never felt at a disadvantage with a seven foot rod.
YMMV

Re: Places to fish in NJ

Found a mistake already. Crystal Lake in Oakland is not owned by the municipality. It's owned by a predatory (members only) lake club that's suing everybody who owns property that was developed by the same developer that created the club. Having said that ... The Borough just bought a few flood pron...

Re: wild trout streams

I found this on another site. Looks pretty cool. http://maps.wildtroutstreams.com/NJ.html yeah, these ratings are quite generous. The "stream" in my back woods is shown as a FW2-TCP1. It is literally a drainage ditch. Does it drain into a legit TP stream? I just noticed one that only has water afte...

Re: Cut-off temp for summer trout?

Traditionally, since stream-side thermometers weren't very precise, they suggested nice round easy to read, and easy to remember, numbers depending on which scale your thermometer used. 70 F or 20 C The 68 F figure happens to be what retentive types get if they convert 20 C to Fahrenheit. Since "the...

Re: Barbless Regulations and Their Pointlessness

IMHO: They can't legislate virtue.
Hook control is as useless as gun control.
Good people will act responsibly, and bad people will find a way to do damage.

It might make gullible people feel better, and vote for pandering politicians, but it won't make any real difference.

Yes, angler skill will always be a greater factor than the hook type used.
Exactly... The unskilled angler is more likely to do a "long distance release" with a barbless hook, minimizing the opportunity for improper handling.

If after the current restrictions are lifted, they wish to resume utilizing volunteers to "bucket stock" up and downstream from the easy vehicle access points, they'll have to notify someone. My local TU chapter normally solicits volunteers, via their website, their newsletter, and email. You don't ...

Re: Opening Day with Joe Brooks

I don't recall him although you seem to be a few years older than I am (born '65). .... He died when you were about 7 years old. In his prime, he was a popular outdoor writer, who wrote for the Baltimore Sun, and the big name outdoor magazines. He was one of the early pioneers popularizing fly fish...

Don’t see anything on the F+W website yet.
That's why I asked.
Their Facebook page is still talking about bats.

BTW: It's occurred to me that they may be waiting to announce until after the 1st, so they don't inadvertently create a new "opening day".

Are they going to announce it?
It's not going to do much good if the general apathetic public, still thinks there's going to be a traditional opener on 4/11.

I used to fish Charlotte Creek in the 1970s. Just about any fly worked so well that I had to relearn fishing if I went elsewhere. I kept count once, 20 brookies in an hour while standing in the same spot. Has it changed? Thanks for all responses guys. I appreciate the help. And Pete, that's great t...

Re: Traveling with Fly Fishing Gear

Nothing to do with security but...
After transporting fishing tackle on an aircraft, check all the screws on the reel(s).
There's something about the vibrations on a plane that aren't good for keeping little screws tight.
