Carp on a fly-rod popper

Was throwing a popper last night on Deal Lake and wound up catching a heavy carp. Was like catching a cross between a striper and an albie, bull dogging and some knuckle busting runs. Great fun - have never done that before. There was a squirrel nearby eating some berrIes on an overhanging tree...I'...

Re: 3 days on the Upper Delaware Rivers

I was up there with a group of friends who have been going up this week for years. Best action I saw was at junction pool in Hancock. Scum line was out of casting range but there were rising fish all day and the boats had a field day with large rainbows. Paths definitely overgrown! We did have risin...

Re: Vest or waist-pack? (And what about the net?)

Just fished with the sling for 3 days in ny. It functioned pretty well and the net clipped to the top of the pack. Sometimes while changing flies the line got caught up in the net or the pack, need to toy with positioning a little. One thing for sure, while I'm not an aggressive or deep wader, there...

3 days on the Upper Delaware Rivers

Fished the east and west branch, main stem, Bk and the Willow - bugs and fishing were slow. Best bugs were on the EB. March browns, caddis, and some sulphurs were around but no olives or drakes. Was a with a group of guys all dry fishing and I don't think anyone caught more than two per day. Nymphin...

Hopatcong 5/25

Fished today with a buddy from 7-2pm. Picked up a few bass on subsurface flies and lots of assorted perch, crappie, rock bass, etc. Fun to fish the lake before it gets too crowded.

Micro striper last night

Fished for a short while in Ocean Cty. SE wind was not pleasant for casting and water was getting dirty. Caught one very small bass on a bunker fly. No one else Out there other than the surfers.

Re: Vest or waist-pack? (And what about the net?)

Went with the Simms Waypoints small pack. Everything seems to fit and there is a good spot to clip the net. I like that when it's empty it's very light...never a fan of gear that weighs too much before you start loading it up.

Re: Vest or waist-pack? (And what about the net?)

Spent some time up at Tightlines today and went with a sling pack. It seems to fit everything and the net hooks nicely at the top. Psyched to put some hours on it.

Re: Recommend some flies

If you feel like fishing on top, tie on the #14 elk hair caddis or the #14 parachute adams and cast upstream to likely runs and pools. If the water is fast and or riffly go with the caddis since it floats really well. In the soft flat pools go with the adams. Most important part is to let the fly fl...

Vest or waist-pack? (And what about the net?)

After a lifetime of using an overpacked and underused vest, I'm thinking of going to something to wear around my waist. I've already started trying to slim down to one (large) fly box, but I'm wondering where to hang my net. If I don't attach it to me I'll definitely lose it, and it seems attaching ...

Re: What color buggers do you like

Agree - that is the one fly to have, and definitely with a bead. Would argue the best fly all around for all freshwater species.

Re: Pike on a Fly

Tiable wire for sure. I think it will prevent other species from striking, but when after toothy critters it's a must! (Mono is akin to taking a knife to a gun fight IMHO)

Re: What color buggers do you like

Black, olive, or a combination of the two. I like them early before the fish start looking up. (Great on bass, too)

Re: Hacklebarney WTS

Rhinehart's Brook. Thanks for the info- didn't know they were evicting those fish! Trout Brook does have a waterfall (very picturesque) that would make it impossible for anything to get above it. It's also right next to the parking lot, and much better on the body!

Hacklebarney WTS

Fished one of the WTS's in the park last Saturday. Did far more walking than fishing, but did get to see some nice (tiny) trout rising for a small caddis. Flow was a bit lacking so spots were limited. Legs still sore from the hike! Saw some guys walking around with trout on the Black River.
