Re: Peapack Brook 3/9/2020

100% wild browns. We have no state holdover browns still alive at this point.

Re: Public Meeting on Trout Stocking Program February 29

To answer Johnw questions on returning Brook Trout. Here a few photos of Brook Trout caught from the Raritan river (save the mishandling comments please) when the State was stocking Brook Trout upriver. These trout were caught near the fish ladder in Bound Brook, not far from the tideline in New Br...

What's interesting to me is that it's still trout maintenance down even under lake solitude. Always figured that lake destroyed the temps but seems like it's good enough to hold a lot of good trout. Probably due to the tribs?
It does which is why TM and not TP below the dam.

Re: Public Meeting on Trout Stocking Program February 29

I don't know if the state had the power to step in and stop the restoration of Ledell's Pond on the upper Passaic and the Lake Solitude Dam on the SBRR. Seems like historic structures can't be removed which is silly. I mean if you are partially or completely rebuilding them, how are they still hist...

Re: Public Meeting on Trout Stocking Program February 29

I'm all for tree planting. The Raritan river either has huge 200 year old trees or nothing it seems. From a scientific standpoint, the single most important restoration technique we can use on all rivers and streams in need of restoration is plant native trees and shrubs along their banks. Far more...

Re: Public Meeting on Trout Stocking Program February 29

Temperature Impacts on NJ's Wild Trout Populations. 1) Any impoundments on trout production waters should be considered for removal except for those that are used for utilities, as a potable water source or offer significant recreational value. The state cannot force private dam owners to remove th...

Re: WTS 1/30

Fly fishing is about much more than catching fish, and bragging about the size of them. What Joe said. Every fly angler knows he/she can catch more using spin gear. Every one of us. We choose fly fishing for the limitations it brings to fishing and trying to overcome those limitations. For me, I'd ...

Re: WTS 1/30

didnt you know, once a trout touches a soft plastic or a spinner blade, they instantly blow up. Therefore I use marabou jigs, they only explode 33% of the time :geek: Where is the fun in that?! Back to the main topic, I think the improved water levels we are seeing recently will help trou...

Re: da brookies and da browns

About a mile downstream of this dam there is a bridge crossing. This bridge crossing had a dandy pool on the downstream side. A 25 foot long, 10 foot wide and 4 foot deep pool that held a bunch of wild browns. It was there for decades until they decided to do a little bridge repair and that pool wa...

I was hiking near a small WTS on Sunday and I noticed some trout rising. I went over to investigate and saw some crawling up on the rocks.
The native brookies were popping on top in Lamington tribs the other day to LBS trying to hatch. Dry fly in February. :) :)

Re: WTS 1/30

Birds could do real number on a stream, but I don't see how they could lead to a wholesale collapse like the one you mentioned in NE NJ (the Q?) Correct. Biology 101 tells us that predator numbers flex up and down based on the availability of prey. They cannot by design wipe out their own food sour...

Re: WTS 1/30

We had a NINE year drought or borderline drought. I'm unsure why so many seem perplexed at the significant decrease in wild trout over that time. Predation obviously is amplified during low flow years. That trend is mostly gone the last two years. There is nothing here to worry about, it's just the ...

Re: Tiger Trout

I've caught several stocked tigers, but still no wild tigers in my 47 years fly fishing. Nice fish, LU. Im empty in both scenarios. Hope if i hit more brookie-like water in a brown trout stream i can find a wild one. From my understanding theyll be around where brookies are dominate in a stretch wh...

Re: WTS 1/30

That looks like the WTS I fish mostly. It also has had a huge drop off in numbers over the past few years. I haven't seen any real rebound at all yet, but I don't fish there as much as there are few trout. One guy who lives upstream told me they are rebounding a bit, but we will see. This is the ye...

Re: WTS 1/30

Used to be a great stream. Now its mediocre at best like a lot of our trout production streams. What do you attribute this general decline to? Multiyear drought, increased development, generally warming temps? IMO opinion, the multi-year drought that seemed to ALWAYS include low spawning season flo...

Re: WTS 1/30

One of the biggest challenges in NJ is finding accessible WTS water and winter with everything wide open is a good time to do so. Only a handful of WTS are 100% public - like VCB and Dunnfield - and those few get more attention for it. Never understood how no landowner-access agreements have been m...
