Re: social distancing on opening day ?

There are a sh*t ton of fresh, finless stockies in the rivers already since they had to start early. Nobody is out targeting them. All are bridge dumps because the Division cancelled volunteer stocking for now. All waters open through this Sunday. Then only special regs waters on a C&R basis only. ...

Re: Access question

Thanks Rusty. Thanks for the new vocab word: thalweg. Sounds old or middle English - or middle earth. I'll look it up in the ol' OED. It's a German work loosely translated to "river valley". It is a key word in my work, but a completely unknown word outside of river restoration. All of our designs ...

Re: Access question

Huey Lewis is a doosh as is the owner of Cox Cable . 2 guys who buy prime land in Montana because of the beautiful land on a trout stream , knowing Montana has the high water mark wading law . Then lobby to change the law DOOSH ! His other partner in crime was Earnest Schwab of the brokerage house ...

Re: Access question

Technically the property underneath the water is still their property. If you float thru on a vessel without anchoring. You are not trespassing. I've always found this to be an interesting topic. I heard the law changes depending on what part of the country you're in (?). I remember reading years a...

Re: Access question

Thanks all but I mean the river. Wading from one stocked bridge down through and to, without stepping on dry ground, the the bridge below. The musky is what I'm thinking of. Below Pt mnt TCA are several bridges with stretches that go through private property. Conceivably one could wade down to Narn...

Re: Peapack Brook 3/9/2020

Serious question, if there are no holdover browns, how did a wild brown appear in a river. It must have parents somewhere. Browns do reproduce in our streams and previously stocked Browns from years past are the origin of the current "wild Browns". What Rusty meant was that currently caught Browns ...

Re: Public Meeting on Trout Stocking Program February 29

To answer Johnw questions on returning Brook Trout. Here a few photos of Brook Trout caught from the Raritan river (save the mishandling comments please) when the State was stocking Brook Trout upriver. These trout were caught near the fish ladder in Bound Brook, not far from the tideline in New Br...

What's interesting to me is that it's still trout maintenance down even under lake solitude. Always figured that lake destroyed the temps but seems like it's good enough to hold a lot of good trout. Probably due to the tribs?
It does which is why TM and not TP below the dam.

Re: Public Meeting on Trout Stocking Program February 29

I don't know if the state had the power to step in and stop the restoration of Ledell's Pond on the upper Passaic and the Lake Solitude Dam on the SBRR. Seems like historic structures can't be removed which is silly. I mean if you are partially or completely rebuilding them, how are they still hist...

Re: Public Meeting on Trout Stocking Program February 29

I'm all for tree planting. The Raritan river either has huge 200 year old trees or nothing it seems. From a scientific standpoint, the single most important restoration technique we can use on all rivers and streams in need of restoration is plant native trees and shrubs along their banks. Far more...

Re: Public Meeting on Trout Stocking Program February 29

Temperature Impacts on NJ's Wild Trout Populations. 1) Any impoundments on trout production waters should be considered for removal except for those that are used for utilities, as a potable water source or offer significant recreational value. The state cannot force private dam owners to remove th...

Re: WTS 1/30

Fly fishing is about much more than catching fish, and bragging about the size of them. What Joe said. Every fly angler knows he/she can catch more using spin gear. Every one of us. We choose fly fishing for the limitations it brings to fishing and trying to overcome those limitations. For me, I'd ...

Re: WTS 1/30

didnt you know, once a trout touches a soft plastic or a spinner blade, they instantly blow up. Therefore I use marabou jigs, they only explode 33% of the time :geek: Where is the fun in that?! Back to the main topic, I think the improved water levels we are seeing recently will help trou...
