Re: White Perch
Only 7-11 inches but great fighters on the Ultralight and super tasty when fried whole in peanut oil, coated in beer/cornmeal/old bay. My kid eats the tails like potato chips!

Re: Is this the new fly that everyone is raving about ?
I forgot all about corn as a trout bait-Seeing that fly, I had a flashback to my first trout trips with my dad where we caught stocked trout on canned corn.

Son of a gun, so now you can buy weed legally in NJ? I had heard that they passed some legislation a few years ago but implementation was slowed down. I smell weed all over the place in DC but cant partake as I have a federal security clearance.

Re: White Perch
My brother is coming down to DC this weekend and we will target white perch for a fish fry. Now is about the time of year here where they should be in the river in large numbers. They are exppensive, but we are getting some blood worms to increase our chances of getting big ones.

Re: Please keep Jim Holland in your thoughts and prayers
Sorry to hear-I spent a lot of time at the shop when I lived in the area and he was always as enthusiastic about trout fishing as I was! Praying he pulls through this and gets back out on the water!

Re: Shad Fishing
Hope you all had some success this weekend! I got some buddies out that dont fish and was able to put them on the fish. I had to teach one guy how to cast but but once he got that down, the fish cooperated. Herring were also running this weekend and my kid doubled up several times with 10-12 inch he...

Re: Shad Fishing
It was blown out here last weekend and most of last week-I still tried on Sunday, Monday, and Wed and got the skunk-water was cold and turbid with debris as you described the Big D. I even slipped and fell into 50 degree waste deep water-that was a crummy 4 mile bike ride home...Thus the fishing on ...

Re: Shad Fishing
So its the second half of April and hear in DC it is peak shad season on the Potomac! The bite was absolutely on fire over the Easter weekend-pretty much a strike every cast. Even though they were hickories, there were big (2-4 pounds I would guess) and fought like the devil-I think they were fresh ...

Re: Come hell or high water
@Rusty-how can you travel this time of year without at least rod on the car?? @Drossi-tell me about it...this weekend the Potomac was high and muddy as well. The high water wasnt the main problem-the turbidity prevented me from seeing the good spots to cast and prevented the shad from seeing my offe...

Black bears sound similar to the Russian bear. They talk tough, but stand your ground, punch it hard in the nose, and it will eventually back down.

Re: Shad Fishing
After an early start of the run, this terrible cold snap will delay things a bit. It is going to be about 20 degrees here tonight with highs in the 30s. I am away this week and look forward to shad fishing some more starting the weekend of April 8th!

Re: Shad Fishing
After my first trip out this weekend I gathered some more intel on my current home river, the Potomac. Last year the VAST majority of shad that I caught here were hickory shad with only a small handful of Americans. I ran into the manager of the Fletchers boathouse (the unofficial capital of the DC ...

Re: Shad Fishing
I rode my bike 4.5 miles to the Potomac today at Fletchers cove-its in far NW DC and a surprisingly wooded across from some cliffs on the VA side. I met two buddies who are also looking to get into fishing and we did a little recon mission. Water flows war perfect and air temps were balmy with water...

Re: Shad Fishing
Shad fishing is feast or famine-you could be catching none or you could be catching them every cast. Slight changes in flows, water temps, tactics can make a lot of difference. As simple as it sounds, you need to be in the right place at the right time in the right conditions AND you need to get you...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAVXebmZUqA Most definitely thinking about it-this shad run documentary starts off at my kid's school in Bethesda and is about the Potomac shad run and the east coast shad run more generally-I will watch it tonight with my kid to get amped up about the run. I have ju...

Assuming ice is still solid, saturday would be an ideal day to get out on the ice with pleasant temps, sunshine, and hopefully biting fish in advance of the front that will come through saturday night/sunday

No, but i did eat some smoked wild sockeye salmon this morning on my bagel-it was cheaper than the farm raised atlantic salmon they had for sale.
