Those are impressive fish! How far up the Raritan did they run?

Re: Connetquot Brook Trout and Toms River

I could not find any documented report of salters in NJ but I suspect that if you went back 500 years or so there may have been some with a large number of waters having wild brook trout. As far as establishing a salter run in the Toms it would most likely have to be supported by stocking of brook t...

Connetquot Brook Trout and Toms River

So now that I live just over a half hour from the special reg section of the Toms River I will bring up a past topic. I understand that it may be years before the NJF&W breed and stock brook trout but in the past there has been discussion about stocking brook trout from the Connetquot Hatchery in th...

OK, no problem.
Have you considered emailing Dr. Hitt to ask for the paper?
Good idea!

Re: Big Flatbrook 11/1

Rusty - Do you know if the Flatbrook ever had a native brook trout population, or any and all trout were introduced? The Flatbrook still has native brookies, more north of route 206 than in the No-Kill. There has been extensive studies done of the native brook trout in that river/watershed by Natha...

Re: Big Flatbrook 11/1

I can understand that numbers of wild fish may be down with the prior couple of years with drought and low water making the trout easy pickings for predators along with questionable spawning success. And even though wild brookies may not be particular about what to eat, they are still difficult to g...

Re: Big Flat Brook

Even though I am much farther away I still check the USGS water flows on the Flat Brook daily and WOW! I cannot believe the flow is over 1100 CFS in Flatbrookville. The last couple of years we have prayed for rain during the spawning season and subsequent winter periods for the fry to hatch and surv...

Re: Toms River

I am told that there is action on the top in the evening. I have fished the Toms over 100 times over the years but never in the evening. I have caught fish on top but very few. Because of the size of the river and the surrounding trees and brush, fishing on top is difficult but not impossible. Fall...

Re: anyone getting out?

Too many angler “tweeting” favorite fishing locations! Don’t they know herons search Tweets to know where the trout are? We can only blame ourselves. Rarely see Herons on this stream, as it's a secret..lmao...no really, rarely do I see them there, kind of odd, for in the past there were soooo many ...

Re: Toms River

Thanks for the good tips. It is going to be quite an adjustment for some one that had wild brook trout a short walking distance from his house. I will be back to haunt them but I will start looking into some salt water gear.

Toms River

After 43 years in Sussex County I am now a resident of Barnegat in Ocean County. Although I will still frequent my NW Jersey favorites, this site used to have a fair amount of Toms River enthusiasts. What is the latest and is it worth heading out to the Toms when I cannot travel North?

Re: Flat Brook

I am not sure how much room you have but I would take both your clubs and fishing gear. If the Flatbrook is below 68F in the early morning you could get a couple of hours fishing starting just after dawn. There are also some great courses at Crystal Springs and I would take advantage of them.

Re: WTS surprise tenant

My grandfather and fellow Italian buddies treated eels like gold. I used to take the train from Hackensack to Hoboken with my cousin and we brought along spinning rods, bait, and an empty potato sack. We used to fish an abandoned pier before Hoboken’s rebirth and usually wound up with between one an...

Spread out over 10 days it should replenish our water table and flows and help the wild and holdover stocked Trout get through August. Just glad I am not in vacation next week!

Re: Terrestrials

There are a couple of major streams in NJ that offer some good early morning fishing using ant, cricket, and other terrestrial patterns. If the water temps are good I will fish from dawn to about 8AM.
