Re: Pequest TCA
Head downstream a half mile. You can thank me later. 8-) Last time I did that I got into fish (stocked browns, that's how long it's been), I also had a big azzed bear wander into the river 50 yards below me. I made a lot of noise and high tailed it in the opposite direction, except I tripped over a...

Re: Shad Fishing
Looks like fun, would like to give it a try. I have a 5 weight switch rod that would be perfect with fast sink poly-leader. Just don't know where a decent area is up north that is fairly close to the road/parking and safe to wade out. There are far more areas than you might expect. Yes, it is a big...

Re: Pequest TCA
I fish it periodically, My observation has been the same as yours  . I think its due to the fact of silt & sand build up making it shallower. Also the structures has changed somewhat. There used to be some nice riffles about 10 ft before the discharged that always produced. But It hasnt the la...

Re: Shad Fishing
I've been using a 7 weight with sink tip line, but wish I had a faster sink line on it most days. I tie some of my own and use small darts other times which cast well with a fly rod. They fight very well on fly rods and light tackle. A good buddy has shown me some of his best spots, so I'm sworn to ...

Re: Shad Fishing
Delaware water temps are hovering around 49 degrees. Shad may be in the river now, but won't be very active until water temps hit 55 - 62. That said, a few buddies that are local sharpies have been out and I only know of one American shad landed so far by those guys. Next week maybe for NJ waters. I...

Re: Pequest TCA
Covid has brought out more anglers than ever before. The Pequest TCA is not 100' long, despite what 99.99% of all anglers believe. Head downstream a half mile. You can thank me later.

Re: Last weekend on general waters until the opener
TCAs, No-Kills, listed WTS, registered trout clubs, and non-stocked trout waters are all open to fishing. Any trout must be returned until Opening Day.Razorbacker wrote: ↑Tue Mar 22, 2022 8:46 pmI can't interpret the regs.... is it C&R on WTSs and TCAs the next couple or totally closed?

Re: Last weekend on general waters until the opener
I hate this...Do it at a lake, fishing for ditch pickles and crappie, where it is practical. People have their grills half in the road, leave litter and brother residents. Just my opinion... I was poking fun at a terrible situation, I agree with on water etiquette and carry out more then you carrie...

Re: How many flies do you fish on a nymph rig
I think we all know how I voted. JK, I typically nymph (when God forbid the trout aren't rising) with two flies. But sometimes, especially during a caddis hatch, I will fish three. I will use the knot between my leader and tippet to hang a long tag off to tie on an emerger style fly several fe...

Re: A conversation with the new Chief of Freshwater Fisheries regarding spring stocking
Posts like this are a good way to show the Division biologists and others in the regulations making business how anglers feel. I happen to know many sites, including this site, are routinely "trolled" but in a good way by Division staff as well as Council members. They need to hear from all sides of...

Re: A conversation with the new Chief of Freshwater Fisheries regarding spring stocking
There will be one minor deviation from the 'usual' spring stocking schedule. In an effort to head off any potential staffing shortage issues due to illness that might possibly arise during the stocking period that would adversely impact getting the fish from the hatchery into the waters, an additio...

Re: A conversation with the new Chief of Freshwater Fisheries regarding spring stocking
Nice........ @ least they sound like they consider out opinion  GREAT to go back to the old stocking schedule. Spreads out the fish to be caught thru out late Spring & less mortality from the early attempt of C&R. I would strongly disagree with that first part, although the second part is true...

A conversation with the new Chief of Freshwater Fisheries regarding spring stocking
Shawn Crouse and I had the chance to catch up on all things NJ trout, and the topic of spring stocking came up. The Division decided to revert back to the traditional stocking routine this spring without use of volunteer stockers in the WCC program in an effort to put the pandemic behind us and to r...

Re: An ambassador for the upper raritan watershed
A great learning job to springboard AmeriCorps Ambassadors to a future career. The pay is horrible, but you will learn a lot and meet many contacts that will help you with a future job. On a side note, the Raritan Headwaters Association is hiring a project manager to manage Superfund settlement proj...

Re: Has anyone been out for trout
Looks like a spawning redd. Remember that on warm days in winter when snow and ice are melting, the river temps are actually dropping which reduces a trout's metabolism. Once the ice and snow are all melted and we get a warm day, then the trout will be active as water temps warm. But I do understand...

I heard a lot less vendors , but same fee to get in the door ... How does that work ??? Supply Chain ? Inflation ??? Or my customers aren't that important . Put yourself in the owner's shoes. They had zero income last year and reduced income this year. What appeared to be a solid business model isn...

Re: 2022 Fishing Digest
I've been ice fishing for 50 years now. It's largely a social event more than any other type of fishing I do. We always grill venison and do a fish fry on the ice, and there is often lots of booze flowing depending on where we are fishing (and driving). I've been out three times so far with plans f...

Re: Hard water fishing this weekend
Nice looking bar and fish! That brown looks like a football flopping around-do they feed their fish in the pond or do they get that fat on their own? The pond owner feeds them pellets until the ice comes. He had us kill a smaller (16") brown trout and it had lots scuds in its stomach. So they have ...
