Re: Late spring - summer fly fishing
Take a stream thermometer with you. As has been discussed, you don't have to stop fishing until the temps hit at least the upper 60's. Exact # is open for debate as this thread shows. You can also fish early or late and let the fish rest in the middle of the day. We still have good water unlike the ...

Re: Stocking Truck
Sunfish were the first fish my twin daughters caught at age 5. Naturally we had to have them for dinner. Pan fried the filets. They were good but you are right, they were the size of potato chips.

Re: Vest or waist-pack? (And what about the net?)
I use a sling pack. I hook my net to it high up with a D-ring and larger retractor. It stays out of the way behind me and I just need to reach back to get it.

Re: Proper Catch & Release
Good article. I would add two things. C&R in the water, not on the bank. You can always dip your net back into the water if you are having trouble getting the hook out to let the fish breath and keep the gills wet. Barbless hooks make this easier and come out of your thumb with less pain. Also, if y...

Re: Casting lesson
When I'm in Shannon's I see people new to fly fishing asking questions all the time and the staff is always very helpful. No snobbery. They are just glad to see your interest in the sport. You could not get more down to earth people than the crew there.

Re: Beginner Fly outfit
The "Encounter" rod and reel combo sounds good. You can find cheaper priced but they are also cheaper made. For flies, I would stop into a local fly shop and ask what is working. Little Black Stone is a great fly but I would never fish it in May or June. What I'm trying to say is that with a pre-pac...

Re: Hot Spring 2018 Flies
Little black stones and chimarras are done. Small emergers and Frenchies worked today for me. Hendricksons are active and may work but stuck with what I was using as it worked.

Re: South Branch 4/19
I fished 4/19. Sounds like scuds but they were actively taking midges. By the way, lots of Hendricksons today but very few rises.

I'm glad the forum is back. I go by "barkeater". I'm from Monmouth County and belong to Jersey Shore Chapter of TU. I was on the JSTU board for the last 4 years but am taking a break from board duty currently. I enjoy fly fishing and am a C&R person
