Black River

I hit the Black River yesterday. What a beautiful stream. The river changed a bit since I'd last been there: many fallen trees now cross the stream, forming numerous new pools that hadn't been there the last time I fished it. Not many leaves down yet, so finding open water was pretty easy. I managed...

Shameless plug - I am presenting tonight at Ramsey Outdoor (Succasunna) on Fall and Winter Trout Tactics. Lots of little tips to catch more fish.
I remember John Collins presented winter fishing techniques years ago...still have his handout.

Re: anyone getting out?

I haven't been out in a while. I'm at the point in my (family) life where fly fishing is a Spring activity. Our family has been enjoying sailing boats in the Fall during the last few years so that's where our Fall weekends have been going. Spring's wild temps & inconsistent winds are not ideal for s...

Re: In Search of Wild Trout Under the NJ Turnpike?

Can't fish Mason Run, private property owned by the golf course, I think since Trump took over the golf course they have been working with Brian. Brian is a great spokesman, there is some other streams which have some wild trout down here in South Jersey, but it is very tight lipped crew that fish ...

Re: In Search of Wild Trout Under the NJ Turnpike?

Just about in my back yard, there is a book about Mason run, Saving Mason's Run. Our TU chapter does work on this stream. Mason's Run sounds like it's worth a trip to explore. Thanks for the info, fellas. If it's a bust, at least the CowTown Rodeo ("the oldest weekly running rodeo in the USA") isn'...

In Search of Wild Trout Under the NJ Turnpike?

Long ago, I remember overhearing a conversation about famed, but unsubstantiated wild trout that cruised under the NJ Turnpike. Even though my recollection contradicts my intuition, I recall that stream flowed through Central/South Jersey (and not Northern), as in between Helmetta and Cherry Hill. D...

Re: Return to a favorite...Van Campens 8/5

I hope you found peace and strength during that time, Mark. That sounds rough.

But nice trout, as always. I think a bronze should be made of your famous "NJ Angler" fish hold--it's classic.

I just drove from Schooleys Mountain through Long Valley, Tewksbury and Pottersville. Great to see the SBRR and the Lamington both flowing strong and full, without flooding. You just passed me, I work in Tewksbury!!! :D And by Tewksbury, you mean the McD's in Clinton  Very funny

My grandfather and fellow Italian buddies treated eels like gold.
Same for my Italian relatives. Any time I see an eel, I think of my Aunt Connie (who has been dead for 20 years).

Re: Late spring - summer fly fishing

Opinions on this will vary, but many say don't fish for trout once water temps exceed ~67 degrees F. At that point, I like to fish for bass or bluegill.

I'd also recommend reading Lee Wulff's Trout on a Fly (1986) if you're new to the world of fly fishing.

Have fun-

Sunnies are probably my second favorite fish on the fly!
No doubt! I fished Round Valley a few years ago from my kayak and caught some the size of dinner plates. They pulled me around, left a small wake if I remember

Revisiting a favorite WTS with BiggerThomas III

Yesterday my younger son and I visited a WTS that had been one of my favorites pre-children. He's now almost 8 and eager to wet lines. It was a little buggy, but beyond that, a great day: fun casting practice, lunch on a stream-side log, and no cheek hookings  . And, in his words, we also "beat...
