Re: 4/15
All three are March Browns. Maccaffertium vicarium. It helps to know that the Musky has zero hex hatches, and if it did, they would be summer hatches. It also helps to know that this is the time for March Browns after the Hendricksons have finished their hatch first.

Re: Shad Fishing
Shad run in water below 50 degrees, they just won't eat a fly or dart or spoon unless its more or less 50 degrees and warmer. Remember, American shad are in the herring family and are plankton feeders, so they are not even eating but rather striking at something flashy that mimics nothing in nature....

Re: Natirar smallmouth fishing
I go there sometimes. Ive seen trout in there just last month, probably not worth the effort to target them with the nice smb population to target instead. TOo bad the ravine lake dam spillway is private property too. I bet there's some nice fish there. I like to fish the other parts of the upper n...

Re: SBR on Shannons stretch
Both the KLG and the parts from Hoffman up are beautiful stretches, however, I agree with everyone else about how busy it gets. I'll still fish them a couple times a year, but generally avoid them. The KLG gets quickly unbearable with the amount of people that show up there. I have not fished the g...

Re: SBR on Shannons stretch
Was surprised to see some folks think that the water between Hoffmans and the bridge over the river in downtown Califon by the fly shop is lightly fished. I think of that water as the exact opposite and stay away when it is crowded. It's the old YB saying--Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowde...

Re: SBR on Shannons stretch
That's a Shannon's stocked Kamloops rainbow and not a state stocked bow from Pequest. And yes, they fight like a mule. They are steelhead stock in their native Candian waters, hence the fight. NJ's rainbows are an abomination of federal and state hatchery rainbows with roots most likely from the McC...

Re: Nature's float stock program
Most of the rivers out there dropped back down to very fishable levels quickly after that storm. Lets me know the ground can handle much more water this time of the year! But it was also very dry lately. Forest fire risk level signs up this way were reading "Very High" and rivers were all well belo...

Re: Lower Wanaque Damaged Severely
DEP Enforcement was contacted and the county will be inspecting it today, I was told. If memory serves now that I better understand where this is, it was supposed to be a de-snagging of tree project. But this excavator (not backhoe) is digging in the channel, and that is typically not part of any de...

Re: Rise Forms
Could the rising fish not be creek chubs, smallmouth bass, rock bass and sunfish that are so prevalent in the North Branch ? :?: Sure, but I assumed that because this is a trout site, we were talking about that species. That said, I once wade fished the big pool above the Buckingham boat ramp in PA...

Re: Rise Forms
Rise forms tell you not only where in the water column a fish is feeding, but gives you a solid clue what they are eating. Generally speaking, a slashy rise happens just under the surface film and indicates that they are feeding on emerging insects. Whether those are emerging caddis or emerging mayf...

Re: Lower Wanaque Damaged Severely
You should call WARNDEP at 877-927-6337. Report it and ask for a case number you can follow up with. Chances are it is permitted although if a wild trout stream, then only since 3/16. DEP Enforcement will likely call you to tell you what they learned. If it is permitted, then you know it has proper ...

Case by case. Sandy Hook is closed because they crowded the beaches, but DWGNRA is open still. We'll see what this weekend and some nice weather brings. My guess is more bad behavior, but I hope I'm wrong.

Re: All state and county parks closed!
Hello all, I used to post a lot back in the day because I used to fish more but I have to put somethings into perspective....Corona virus spreads at a rate 1:2, the flu 1:1.2. Mortality rate for the flu .01%, Corona is somewhere between 1% and 10% and I know is all based on testing but if we were c...

Re: Shad Fishing
I know a lot of anglers use shad spoons as well as darts. Pink always seems to be the hot color for any flies or lures or so it seems when I read reports or get pix from buddies out fishing.

Re: All state and county parks closed!
Did they close the State Forests? I have a cabin rented in mid-May at Stokes. My wife passed away last week and it has been difficult. I was looking forward to a few days on my old trout haunts to help clear my head. Pat, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your wife! Please know you are in my ...

Re: Changes to NJ trout season about to be announced
Just my opinion - State should have cut the limit back to three. Way too many greedy people that will fish everyday, take a limit or three because they have time, and clean out a stream in a couple of weeks. The season to keep fish hasn't even opened yet. That's this coming Saturday. I see more and...
