Re: Alright, which one of you forgot to do a rain dance??
Gosh, I wish we could switch the weather. Here in Bethedsa/DC area, it has rained almost every day all summer with some of the hardest tropical like down pours. The weeds and mosquitos are out of control in our backyard! My mom in NJ keeps complaining that we get all the rain and they keep getting n...

Re: smallie season
I love summer smallmouth wet wading. Unfortunately this year has been hit or miss for me in Maryland on the Potomac and tribs. I tend to do best in September when the weather is just starting to turn but water still warm enough to wet wade. I remember a remarkable mid September day last year on a Po...

Re: Rapidan River, Shenandoah National Park
My family is still out of town in Mozambique so I just decided to hit the Rapidan river this weekend. Its been a fairly rainy summer in Virginia and there will be low temps in the low to mid 50s this weekend so the fishing for wild brook trout could be decent. As much as I love the NJ or Vermont wil...

Re: Brook trout ponds of Vermont
As far as I can tell, when they do stock brookies, they try to take from a more or less local strain, but probaably the exact strain. The pond I was fishing has natural reproduction that is supplemented by fingerling stocking by helicopter-again not sure if they are using the exact heritage strain f...

Re: Dottie
There is not much that you cant catch with the old night crawler! They were working great for the large brook trout in that Vermont pond when cut in little sections on a tiny jig. I catch white perch on them. Any bass and pan fish species and catfish too. Were you dead sticking it or were you jiggin...

That is terrible news-I spent many hours with him in the shop drinking coffee and talking with him about all the great fishing spots that we both knew. May the trout be rising for him forever!

Re: Brook trout ponds of Vermont
There are some big pickerel in the first lake-I imagine that they could have tried to eat the rock bass. The brook trout were good-I was kind of rushing and tried cooking in a cast iron pan directly over fire-they may have came out better on the stove with a little more oil but I was going for it al...

Re: Brook trout ponds of Vermont
It sure was a special day! There were some primitive camping spots near the lake where the AT passed by-it would be been nice to fish magic hour when the fish come to shallower sections and rise to insects. I was fishing from a rock ledge with a cliff behind me that made casting a fly rod very chall...

Re: Brook trout ponds of Vermont
What a day in the Green Mountain state! I hiked around a few different brookie streams and caught some micro brookies on dry flies-nothing big but nice scenery. Then I hiked an hour and a half up a mountain to Little Rock pond. I had hiked there once before and it is supposed to have large wild broo...

Brook trout ponds of Vermont
I am up in Vermont near Mount Holly for a few days on my own. Growing up we came several times a year for fishing/skiing but it has been five years since I have been year. Lots of memories being out on the water with my dad and brother. chasing anything that swims and always catching something. Anyw...

I have been surprised how busy restaurants have been here in the DC area-People seem happy to spend $10 plus for a beer and $14 plus for a glass of wine. I simply cant enjoy a drink at that price.

http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio203/2010/hetke_dust/habitat.htm Here is a good primer on them and a map of their native and introduced range. While the Potomac and Big D can be good smallmouth fisheries depending on the year, I wonder if summer time warm water temps makes them more vulnerable to disease...

Re: smallie season
Big river smallie populations (Big D, Potomac, Susquehanna) fluctuate over the years/decades, depending on weather, pollution, diseases, etc. Spring floods can wipe out whole year classes. Warmer water plus pollution can lead to more diseases. Then there are other species of fish than eat eggs/juven...
