Wild trout 12/10....
I couldnt pass up fishing on a 55F December day so took the day off. Did fairly good size wise but still disappointing #'s for where I fished and what I used to get under similar circumstances. Most interesting catch was a 16" wild brown with a leopard frog still in its mouth. I guess trout do eat f...

Re: Van Campens 11/3
I didn't fish the glen. Part of the area is still closed of from the storms of March 2018. People park by the closed gate and walk in which they shouldn't be doing. The steep side of the ravine has been compromised by fallen hemlocks and erosion. It really is quite dangerous walking back there. The ...

Re: Nice wild brown...
I once watched a GBH tussle with a 17" wild brown on VCB. I kept trying to get it to drop it but it wouldn't. It would fly a few feet, stop and try to turn the fish to swallow it. It eventually did drop it. I grabbed the brown and released it but not sure survived.

Van Campens 11/3
Hit the upper 1/3 from Watergate on up about 3 miles.
Did ok but not great. About 3:1 ratio of brook to bow. Bows up to 11"; Brook up to 8". I guess the good news is I saw a lot of yoy fish....especially bows.

Re: Nice wild brown...
Nice catch for Jersey waters, well done. I'm staying off the WTS's until mid-Nov. Let the fish do their thing in peace. I'd be more worried about herons & mergansers making easy pickings of trout in shallow water than anglers fishing. One flock of 6-10 mergansers can kill more fish in a day than an...

Re: Big Flatbrook No Kill section
The hemlock needles fall to ground and acidify the soil which i turns limits plant growth. If you ever notice that in hemlock ravines, the understory is quite open with few plants. As trees fall, openings form which is where invasive plants like japanese barberry and stiltgrass can take root. This i...

Re: India Brook mischeif
I thought destroying wild browns was their priority/policy? I am being a bit facetious of course but I still can't get past the fact they were actually euthanizing them with the Rhinehart situation. They are a valuable fishing resource native or not. Just seems to go against everything they fight to...

Re: Big Flatbrook No Kill section
Most of the tribs are no longer the fisheries they once were. Stony. Tuttles, Parker, Criss, Forked Brooks and a few unamed ones barely support trout now. Too many dry summers, loss of hemlocks and floods have hurt them. Cant blame wild browns in this watershed as very few can be found. Mergansers a...

Re: India Brook mischeif
The NJDFGW doesn't care if the trout population dwindles. I mean good riddance to all those invasive brown trout right?

Re: Old Claremont TCA facelift
Its tough to improve for a number of reasons. Its fairly low gradient which makes narrowing the channel difficult. The stream bottom is more clay/sand/pebble rather than rocks or boulders. I think even if you placed large boulders here and there, it would just erode the banks and not deepen the chan...

Re: Old Claremont TCA facelift
This past summer some kids got it in their heads to dam up one pool. I took care of it. Its not a bad stretch but there is braiding going on which sends the stream off into multiple directions. There are also still some wide, featureless areas that could use some improvement. Mile-a-minute plant has...
