Re: nj brookies... ever again?

I believe that the Pequest hatchery needs to have covers installed over their concrete runways to prevent the disease that infected the browns and brook trout caused by bird droppings. The rainbows seem to have resistance to the disease. At this point my understanding is it is a matter of funding. R...

Re: nj brookies... ever again?

I believe we should never stock a brook trout where wild populations of brook trout exist. However, I would like to see brook trout stocked in a stream like the Toms River where they appear to thrive year round but there is no known spawning.

Re: Big Flatbrook No Kill section

I have been fishing that section of the Big Flatbrook for over 50 years and the wild brookies have been persistent about keeping a presence, even through drought years. The NJDFW has also electro fished portions of the Flatbrook and some wild brown trout were found in the past, a couple in the 18 in...

I also store them in my fly boxes of which I have five that are jam packed early Spring.

A beautiful wild brown trout! Let's hope the good water flows continue for the next 10 years.

Re: Brookies

During the very few times I've been out since the new year I have to agree with you Pat. It seems the return of good water for some time now has definitely had its expected positive impact on the wild pops. BTW, I didn't know you had moved down my way. How far south have you come? I am down in Barn...

Re: leaders - buy or diy

I tied my own for the first seven or eight years of fly fishing. But afterwords I did cave-in to the ease of buying already tapered readers. If I want a really short leader for a nymphimg I will tie my own still. I still have tons of formulas online somewhere.

Brookies

After moving to South Jersey I finally got up to my favorite wild trout streams. Wow, after good flows for over a year, brookies were plentiful and many larger fish compared to recent years. Still plenty of juveniles but I couldn't get over some of the brookies that I was catching. Anyone else notic...

Re: Who Wears A Vest?

I have a 35+ year old Leonard Shortie vest that I always use. Some of the pockets are held together on the inside with duct tape but when I am fly fishing it is part of my skin. I carry many hundreds of flies but they are light and not bulky at all. I know where everything is, including types of fli...

Re: SBRR the premier trout stream?

I would say that the SBRR is the most productive wild trout mid-sized stream in NJ and hopefully additional land around the watershed will be protected.

Why not, they may just work. I make mine out of balsa wood and tippet material. Let us know how the trout like them!

Re: Old Claremont TCA facelift

That is a great stretch of water and I have been fishing there since we (TU) were in talks with Claremont Paint to keep a safe distance from the river when they were ready to build townhouses on the lands adjoining the river - fortunately the project was canceled but they did grant access to the wat...
