Re: Public Service Announcement

Used to do well there back in my bait days but that was many moons ago. Don't think I've fished it in at least 25 years. I can get to other places with less traffic hassle than going to Chester.

Re: upper musky today

The reason you were blanked in some places around Stephens SP is that that area regularly sees summer temps into the low 80s, wiping out 100% of the stocked trout each summer. Only the park over the bridge gets a fall stocking, the other areas in the upper Musky don't until you get to Point Mountai...

The entire river system was flowing heavy, went from 30 cfs to 1000 overnight down at the gauge.
Too bad they couldn't have safely stocked it then, at 1000 cfs those fish would have spread way out. Would have made for even better holdover fishery.

Re: Fall stocking

They "should" close the season Monday-Thursday, stock, then open the season again on Friday. Never happen though cause there'd be howls of dissent. No matter, stocked rainbows are like doritos, they make more in the spring. Enough escape the onslaught to make it to get harvested on Opening day the n...

Re: Alright, which one of you forgot to do a rain dance??

One other issue that impacts ground water in NJ is that so many of our trout streams flow through areas with significant residential development and most/all of these houses use groundwater via their wells for everything (drinking, laundry, showers, watering lawns. etc.) Many other states in the re...

Re: Alright, which one of you forgot to do a rain dance??

Looks like the rain is continuing off and on and strong flows are being sustained in Morris, Hunterdon, Passaic counties-looks like the rainfall hasn't been as consistent in Sussex county. With the cold weather and increased flows, fish will be looking to get ready to spawn. They have another 4-5 w...

Who cares about the stockers. We need water for the fall spawn.

Funny for as many places I've fished in NJ, I've never made it to either DC or VCB.

Re: Wild Brook trout

This thread got me motivated to give it another go. As has been typical for many years now, nothing but Fallfish and Sunfish. Grabbed one of my softer Tenkara rods with a dry fly and hit the streams headwaters. Had to switch to a black Kebari. The dry was getting hammered, and I got tired of drying...

I always thought browns would do very well in that stream.
I'm of the same opinion, at this point in the streams evolution browns would likely be a better option (cause something has clearly changed to eradicate the brook trout).

Re: Alright, which one of you forgot to do a rain dance??

It seems like every time there is a slight chance of a pop up storm since June, it turns into a tropical deluge in a very small area in and around DC. I have to rip out some serious weeds as mosquitos are making a home there, but it has been so hot and humid and buggy, I keep putting it off. Ironic...

While I've never fished it myself, the Esopus is well known for its numerous, but small rainbows. Looks like a good trip.

Re: Warm Water Alternatives

Pretty much any of the stocked streams that aren't designated "trout maintenance" will have populations of bass, sunnies, and the ever present fall fish.

I too ain't much of a pond/lake guy. Don't have a watercraft and don't really have the patience to learn that game.

Re: Any New Toys Purchased or Waiting on Delivery?

Hi, Went to lunch with my wife yesterday on LBI. If there is a recession I did not see it as the restaurant was packed. The traffic going to the Island was bumper to bumper. Even with gas prices above $4.00. The people were still going to the Island. I guess the people just want to look at the Ocea...

I did not use a thermometer, but by feel, I would say 70 degrees
Did you kill and eat the one you caught?

Cause at 70+ degrees of water temp, you very likely killed it.

Will be jumping over to the "bronze trout" as well now that summer is setting in. Hopefully this weekend will be good to go on the Big D. I have to explore some ww spots local to me as well and the Raritan since I cross it 2x a week on the way home from work. [/quote] Do you catch many smallies in ...

Re: Rain

We got 4/10" of rain yesterday here in the headwaters and the SBR is running above median flows as it has basically all year so far. It is 79 cfs today when median flows are only about 62 cfs. Similarly, the Musky is flowing at 165 cfs when normal for today is about 138 cfs. The Flatbrook is the sa...
