Re: so angry at myself- wild brown
Well, on the plus side, the wild browns are there! I know the feeling-it sucks to hurt/kill a fish when you did not intend to. This happened to me last summer-I literally got off a plan after living overseas for ten years and went straight to my parents house in Tewksbury. I always like to fish as s...

Re: Very large native brookies-video
Well that brings up another question-could they just be brookies that were privately stocked?

Re: Very large native brookies-video
I was just joking on the Toms-the only similarity is the tannic water.
Was the rainbow in the video wild or stocked?

Re: Very large native brookies-video
I am puzzled by it as I have never seen a stream like that or brookies like that. Also the browns looked different that I am used to. Also was that a stocked rainbow or a wild one? The kid said that was his first time fly fishing-looks like he is hooked now after a 90 minutes of fishing like that!

Very large native brookies-video

Apparently this video is from NJ. I have never seen a stream that looks like this with 14 inch plus wide bodied native brookies and browns side by side. Does this tannic stream look familiar to anyone??

Rapidan River, Shenandoah National Park
I made my annual fall pilgrimage to Shenandoah National Park to fish for wild brook trout. I decided to fish the Rapidan river as it has five plus miles of absolutely perfect and public wild brook trout habitat. Last year I fished the upper stretch which required a five mile drive on a non maintaine...

Re: Shenandoah River
https://www.murraysflyshop.com/blogs/fishing-report You might be able to glean some info from Murray's fly shop as well. Its a bit quaint, but I think they have been in business for decades and he has written several books on fly fishing for brook trout in the mountains as well as smallie fishing in...

Re: oriental bittersweet
I often wondered if that stream along 523 had any fish in it. Chub and sunfishwater? Any smallies?

Re: Cooler temps
It was down right chilly this evening. I had a few beers on the balcony and it was 53 degree here in the far NW portion of DC at 8pm. It will likely go in the 40s tonight and mid 40s over the weekend, with average lows in the low 60s. The sun looked more like the moon this morning as a result of the...

Re: Banner day on Big D
Really happy to hear about a banner smallie day on the Big D! What did you get them on? With the cooling water, but still over 55 degrees, the smallies are supposed to really go on the feedbag this time of year in preparation for winter. 4 pounds is a tremendous smallie-a ten incher will put a bend ...

Re: Lamington/NBRR Smallies - biggest seen?
Speaking of smallies, my brother took his canoe up to the Spruce run dam from Clinton this past weekend with a bucket of herring as bait and absolutely crushed the smallies at magic hour. He said he landed 9+ fish and lost many many more. Smallies, up to 18 inches were literally jumping out of the w...

Re: Fall 2020 trout Stocking?
Thanks Rusty, that sounds fun! How are flows up in NJ now? I tried to fish the headwater section of a stream in the Catoctin mountains of Maryland on Sunday, but there was very little water so I decided not to bother the native brook trout there. I did fish another stream further down towards to the...

Re: Fall 2020 trout Stocking?
This year for me became a year of fishing "firsts" for me. I made the decision early on in the pandemic to pursue species I normally don't. The upper Delaware was "closed" by request of folks I know and respect, so I stayed away from my beloved West Branch for most of the spring. Instead, I targete...

Re: invasive species
Well, just make sure to harvest any you catch. From what I can gather, Vietnamese folks here in the DC area do love to catch and eat them and consider them a delicacy. It seems that some of our native born anglers prefer to return them to the water as a game fish. The same thing happens with the fl...

Re: invasive species
For better or worse, I see that lots of people like to catch these as a sport fish now and don't kill them like they are supposed to. People in the DC to Philly corridor and beyond specifically target these fish for recreation purposes and seem pleased that they are established.
