Re: It's 18 degrees outside...time to start thinking about hatches
For all of January and much of February, stick with scuds and midges because that is what is available every day for them to feed on. As February progresses, the little black and little brown stones become more important on warmer days during midday hours. Pheasant tails are something trout know th...

It's 18 degrees outside...time to start thinking about hatches
I've gotten back into fly tying and I'm looking at some easy late winter/early spring flies to tie. I tied a zebra midge yesterday which, on a good day, might tempt an inebriated trout that could barely swim straight. This week, I plan on moving onto LBS, little black stoneflies (#16-#18), which usu...

Re: Setting The Hook While Nymphing
Good advice, Bill/Vance. I would also add that once the fish has been hooked, rod angle becomes important. I try to keep the rod around 45 degrees from the surface water plane.

Setting The Hook While Nymphing
Now that I've been fly fishing for almost 20 years, I'm beginning to reflect on how some basics were taught to me when I first started out. It's also come time for me to begin teaching my sons those basics. Setting the hook while nymphing is one of them. I had learned to lift the rod tip straight up...

Re: Behemoth wild brookie
I don't even know what sealed disc drag is, the reel is the only one I've ever used and its an Orvis Clearwater reel that I bought 25 years ago when I was in high school. Straight up miracle I was able to land this one without it. Got that right. It's amazing you landed that damn trout without a se...

I think the question now is was the KLG stocked privately only or did the Division also stock it?

Re: Winter Stockings
Don't have more to say about the winter stockings--but I had heard that the KLGorge had NOT been included during the FALL stocking. So, I recently asked someone from Fish and Wildlife. That person said simply that the number of fish allocated for SBR during the fall stocking DID include "the Gorge"...

A size 16 midge? In what alternative universe are midges growing three times their normal size??? :D I get them big like that sometimes on my porch light. I'll take a picture next time I see a big one. Please, gentlemen. Can we not drift from the purpose of this post which was to justify the use of...
