Re: School Me on Sucker Spawn Flies
I tie them on size 16-14 hooks. You can use any type of hook. Different people use different colors (surprise). I prefer glo-bug egg color and add an orange hot spot. You do want to weight them to be able to fish them near the bottom. I usually use a tandem rig with a weighted nymph up front (French...

No but Tim Flagler was filming so hopefully there will be a video. Correction, group picture is both of the cadets and midshipmen.

Army wins inaugural Army Navy fly fishing contest
Down by three inches with a minute to go, the cadets pull it off with a 13 inch Brown and the stadium goes crazy! Thank you to the Raritan Inn, Shannons and Trout Unlimited as well as to all the other volunteers for hosting this really great event for the cadets and midshipmen. The winning army team...

Re: West Canada Creek
If anyone is up by the West Canada this week, the White Fly hatch is on. Fished Thursday evening. At about 7 they started to come off with hundreds if not thousands in the air. A White Wulff worked well size 12-14. Light Cahill should also work. These Mayflies spend very little time if any on the wa...

Re: Rain doing any good?
Always interesting to see how these big water events have rearranged the stream. There are a few trees limiting my access to different runs now that I hope are gone but I know there will be new trees blocking my casts to favorite holes and some shade trees that helped to hold trout will be gone. The...

If nobody wants them, and they are in reasonable shape, you could donate them to your TU chapter to raffle. I did this a few years back and it made $100 for the chapter.

Re: West Canada Creek
Just came back from fishing the West Canada this weekend. Good dry fly action from 4 until dusk with fish rising all around us for Light Cahills. The first day we saw 7 other people fly fishing which was concerning but the next day it was 1 and then he left. We had the river to ourselves which belie...

Re: SBR 4-29
These suckers are pretty common in the SB. If the water is clear you can see them grouped along the bottom. I have had fishermen point them out to me mistaking them for trout. I catch them occasionally nymphing up to about 3 pounds. They try to go to the bottom like a brown. Fairly strong fight for ...

Re: Net Rig
I wear a sling pack and have mine attached by strong zinger to my pack at my right shoulder. The pack sits across my back out of the way when fishing. I'm right handed and play the fish with my right hand and have always switched to my left for landing. This allows me to reach behind me with my righ...

Re: Need a Crash Course on Spring Flies
Standard stuff works and 14-18 is good. Throw in a pheasant tail and a Caddis imitator or two such as birds nest or La Fontaine and you will do fine for spring into summer. Add a few species specific Mayfly nymphs a few weeks before the hatch chart indicates that fly is popping not a bad idea. For d...

I use the time it takes to rig up at my truck in winter to see if I'm dressed warm enough or need to add another layer.

Re: Winter Trout, Anyone?
I fished yesterday and managed to net 2 which for me is about right for winter fishing. No sun and it felt cold. Next week is going to be cold but I hope to get out again before I have to renew my license.
I was using egg and midge combo.

Re: Winter Trout, Anyone?
In winter fish slow and keep your nymph just off the bottom. You have to hit them in the nose with your fly sometimes to get a strike. I enjoy winter fishing. There are few anglers and sometimes you have the stream to yourself. As has been said, dress warm. I bring a phone and extra set of clothes j...

Re: CBS video on fly fishing's growing popularity during Q-tine
have honed most of my skill of stock trout fishing in NJ. But not to many places offer large wild trout clean waters as other states. Yes while there is a few rivers in NNJ that are semi clean. lets face it NJ is pretty much dirty river's state from the past of massive pollution still effecting it ...
