Upper Wanaque

Post by Cornbread » Sun Jun 10, 2018 3:55 pm

Hi all - I'm new here, to NJ and relatively new to fly fishing. I went out to the upper Wanaque river Thursday last week and ended up with only some chub fish for the evening. Didn't see anything or anyone else but it definitely looked very trouty (in my noob opinion). Anyone know if that section is stocked? There were stocking signs posted but they looked a few years old. Seems like it would hold wild trout too but didn't see it on the WTS list. Anyways like a really nice stream that doesn't get a lot of pressure and was wondering if anyone had anymore information on it.

Welcome to NJ! The Upper Wanaque is on the stocking allocation list for 2018.

Although I grew up nearby in West Milford, I never fished that river. But I seem to recall many threads over the years here and on the old NJTrout about poaching being an issue on that river and low fish counts as a result after stocking season ended each year. Perhaps others with more experience can weigh in.

I have fished it less and less over the years. It get super warm with top flow from Greenwood Lake. Never really seems to hold fish much into the season. Looks better than it is unfortunately.

I remember seeing an article from one of the magazines put out by NJ Fish and wildlife from about 10-15 years ago-there was a picture of a wild 19-22 inch wild brown trout.

That brown was not from the upper Wanaque. If it's the picture I'm thinking of, it came from the section we fished on the NJTrout "Bou" day outing.

I remember that they did say it was from the Wanaque river
