Mine Brook Stream restoration? North Branch Raritan River

Post by coaltrout » Fri Sep 06, 2024 3:43 pm

Sometime last week or so, I visited the North Branch upstream by Far Hills and saw the water was very muddy/stained.
I brushed it off, thinking it was from the T-storms that night, but i didnt think it was that rough?

A few days ago i visited it again and saw the same.
So I then went upstream to see if it was as dirty. It was clear upstream.
I walked downstream and saw that Mine Brook, a tributary, was the culprit!
I saw upstream a boom/skimmer, and the checked above the bank and saw there was stream restoration along that part, around rt 202 and liberty corner road.

The river was pretty terrible in terms of sediment. The entire bottom caked with brown sediment, even the fresh North Branch water wasnt able to really clear it.

At least i fished the lower north branch this weekend and didnt see any clarity issues.

took some videos if necessary

Hopefully a good rain flushes it away, but unfortunately not much in the forecast.

Not us, we just got back from three straight weeks@(and 3 projects) in CT. I'm guessing it was one of my two main competitors, but I don't know. It took us 300 years to f#@k up our rivers, so it will take us 100 years to repair them.

curious, has a stream restoration ever been fully documented on video. would be cool to see footage of the entire progress

Many, but they would bore you to tears. We have lots of time lapse videos of restoration of a specific site. I'm doing about 1/4 mile of the Musky the week of October 7th if anyone wishes to come watch us dig three new pools, add barbs to push the thalweg off the left bank, and pull up some riffle habitat across from Musconetcong WMA lands in Bethlehem just downstream of Hampton Borough Park. You really need someone to explain the what and the how and I'm happy to do so if anyone stops by that week.
