Watch out for trout redds

Post by Rusty Spinner » Wed Oct 03, 2018 12:48 pm

The old fall PSA reminding trout anglers fishing in wild trout waters to watch where you walk in the stream over the next couple/few months. Our trout will be doing their dance and making redds to lay eggs in soon. Look for freshly "washed" gravels often near the tailouts of pools or in shallow runs where the cleaned out gravels will have a bowl or oval shaped depression. Try to avoid those areas and be mindful that there will be trout eggs in those redds fairly soon.

I was going to just pull up my old post, but forgot we lost the contents of this site last year. I need to pull some pix off an old laptop and will try to remember this week at some point.

The stockies will be going in this week here and PA, time to give the wild ones a break and let them get on with getting it on! Be a sport and don't target trout on the "make".

Found these two redds in the SBR yesterday afternoon. BTW, egg patterns are doing well right now.

How do you know those are redds ? We have them all over the Raritan river, lower North and South branch too. It seems to come from geese and ducks pounding the bottom.

Because they are in trout waters. Something that looks similar in non-trout waters could be from fowl or other spawning species that do the same thing.
