Skunk Cabbage

We took a family hike the other day to find the headwaters of the North Branch of the Raritan. Along the walk, I started noticing skunk cabbage--tightly wound still, not opened yet, but it was there.

I've known skunk cabbage as a harbinger of spring; but in early January? Does anyone know if skunk cabbage are present all year? Or are they telling us something about the kind of (non) winter we're going to have?

I know nothing about it, but sure hope it's going to be a mild winter!

Ive seen the same lil shoots of skunk cabbage too recently myself. But its not uncommon for me, I would see skunk cabbage all around the woods while hiking back in the years. If it gets warm enough I guess they sprout a bit, but not open up until spring.

Good place to hike and fish btw! I like that trail system.
