1st Trip of 2019

So I decided to hit the river today in search of some trout instead of going ice fishing and I am glad I did.

I figured I would need to be fishing midges so I setup with a size 18 midge as my top fly and a size 16 bead head hares ear nymph tied on a jig hook as my bottom fly.

I landed 4 nice rainbows (all on the hares ear nymph) and lost 3 others.

The air temp was 34 and the water temp was a surprising 40. River was clear with a nice flow.

Here is some trout porn from the trip...

Beautiful colors on those bows. That fly combo is deadly this time of year!

I was expecting to hook up on the midge but no takers. All hook ups were on the hare's ear nymph.

Hare's ear and a pheasant tail nymph are all you need.

I'm typically a PT guy myself when I have to dredge the depths. But it always fascinates me how some days a pheasant tail won't work well, but tie on a fuzzy hare's ear and you can't keep them off your line. They really do mimic nearly anything a trout eats anywhere.

I really like a Beadhead Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail. The CDC really gives it some nice movement in the water.
