First Brook trout

Post by coaltrout » Mon Feb 25, 2019 4:08 pm

A friend and I were able to hook and land out first wild brook trout.
With some simple research, we found a stream that exclusively supports brook trout.

While we had some hit and nibble at the jigs with 1 inch grubs, the few brookies we hooked came on very tiny 1/80th oz jigs with some black marabou.

After we checked out another wild trout stream for less than half an hour, where my bud scored a brownie and both of us a few chubs.

Congratulations! I caught my first wild brookie over 50 years ago and I now spend the majority of my fishing time chasing them.

Great job and those fish all look fat and healthy as they should after a solid rain year. Many more!

40 years ago I spent a week in Vermont chasing brookies, my first trip up there. It carried through til now, I'm so infatuated with them. I still get a thrill when I hook one. My largest natural brookie in NJ was 14"!
