Beginner Fly outfit

All - I am an avid fisherman who used to fish the BASS circuit on the east coast. Was taught to fish for trout by my dad when I was a kid and always used spinning equipment. Now, I am hitting that age where I want to take that next step and learn to fly fish. My 20 year old son ( kids got talent!) wants to learn this too.

Any rod/reel combo's to learn on along with fly kits for NJ would be appreciated.

The "Encounter" rod and reel combo sounds good. You can find cheaper priced but they are also cheaper made. For flies, I would stop into a local fly shop and ask what is working. Little Black Stone is a great fly but I would never fish it in May or June. What I'm trying to say is that with a pre-packaged box of flies, you may get some great flies but if they are not working on the water you are fishing at that time of year you are going to be frustrated. Also, I would encourage you to go to your local TU chapter. You can get a lot of free advise and help there.

If you do a little research and know what type of outfit you want you can get some great deals on-line. If you want some professional help visit a local fly shop like Shannon's in Califon where they will set you up well.
