Report: Clairmont Stretch 25 May, 2019

I fished from the rope swing up to Gronskys on Saturday evening. On the water at 17:40, off at 19:50. There was a number of flies in the air and on the water, caddis and a dark yellow may fly (probably a sulphur). I tricked 8 fish and took 3 to hand. The fish were feeding on the surface. I took one on a grey size 16 klinkhammer, and 2 on a size 14 sulphur. Many hit at the klinkhammer, but I missed a few strikes. The final fish was taken at the back of the pool on the sulphur. I probably could have caught more, but I didn't want to walk back to my car in the dark. Saw, no one on the water, and some deer in the field by my car.
A nice outing.

Browns or brookies or both?

One brown at Gronskys, and two brookies on the way up.

Gonna assume...probably incorrectly that Gronsky's is where the small bridge crosses the river but either way, why is it called Gronsky's?

Isn't Gronsky's below the Clairmont stretch?

I'm getting confused as well. Is there another Gronsky's aside from the one in High Bridge?

Yes, different Gronsky's. I believe the family lives near the Claremont stretch. Not sure if same family as the ice cream place/diner or not. But different location and at the end of the old TCA which is no longer a TCA.

Well, crap. I was told by an old timer that the pool by the bridge was called Gronskys, multiple old timers. If it is not called Gronskys, then my apologies. I amend my initial post by saying:I fished from the rope swing up to the pool right by the bridge, which I falsely assumed to named Gronskys.
Edited to add:
If it is still called Gronskys, then please ignore the previous statement.

Brookies?! I haven't caught a brookie in that stretch in 3 years at least. Good to hear.

Does anyone know if the big tree that used to extend almost all the way across the bridge pool, got cleared away naturally, or did it have help?

I too have always called that pool by the bridge as Gronskys. I guess that makes me an old timer which I am regardless of what the pool is called.

No Idea about the tree, by the looks of things it was swept away, but I cannot be sure. The brookies were small, maybe 10 cm.

It is. It's just that some people will think of the ice cream place and others the Claremont. Same river, ame name but miles apart is all.

After fishing the SB for years this was my first time on this stretch of the river. Fished from the small concrete bridge up to the rope swing. Beautiful water, though no bugs while I was there. Blind casted a caddis and caught one small brookie. Saw a crayfish the size of a lobster.

All the rain we've gotten in the last 9 months or so has really helped that stretch out.

I was just talking to my two business partners about how the SBR is getting rid of so much accumulated fine sediment over the last year plus now. It will be great for future hatches! The woods all along that river are full of sandy soils after 9 years of near drought where the sediment was mainly accumulating within the channel and not getting out into the floodplain.

It will also be better for spawning purposes, assuming that trout spawn in the SBR. Do we know if trout make redds in the SBR itself, or in tribs that feed in?

Definitely right in the SBR, ive seen hundreds of redds over the years!!

Agreed. I see lots of spawning redds in that river above the Gorge each year. But the same high water events will benefit the tribs just as much assuming some need help. Most tribs, although not all, have steeper gradient meaning less sediment in the channel.

Below: just downstream of the route 513 bridge in Middle Valley by the Raritan Inn. See the sand and other fine sediment settled out in the adjacent floodplain. That was early this spring/late winter. It's even more pronounced right now. a few months later.

I believe that sediment will help provide nutrients to new vegetation that will help further secure the banks.
