Who remembers Cam? Funny story

Derek (Cam from here and back in the old NJ Trout days) just reached out to me on Facebook. He just got back into fly fishing and was surprised to catch nothing but rainbow after rainbow in the Toms River TCA. All he could remember is how the state stocked 90% brook trout and only a few rainbows back when he last fished it. As we went back and forth on messenger, it turns out he hasn't fished since 2010 and he had NO IDEA about the furunculosis outbreak at Pequest and the fact that only rainbows are being stocked. :D

We had a laugh over that. Seems he's been very busy with work and family, and we all understand how that goes.

Good old Cam! 9 years is a hell of a long fishing 'drought'! I remember taking him for one of his first wild trout expeditions in Teetertown back in the mid 2000s. Glad he got back on the water!

After 10 years overseas, I am actually moving back to the USof A on Monday morning. I will be based in DC for work and will def get out to the Shenandoah for wild brookie fishing as well do some general pan fishing with my 3 year old daughter in Rock creek park, near our new house. I will also get a NJ license hit my old haunts in the Tewksbury area near my parents house as I will have a few weeks off work before I start in DC in mid September.

I fished two days in PA this year. That is about it. I feel his pain. I try to stay on top of what is going on. I have a had a few days where i had a couple hours but every time the Pequannock was blown out.

I remember Cam and glad all is well ,with him and his family and that he is back fishing. If I remember correctly I introduced him to the Toms and spent time with him showing him some of my secret spots and the most productive way to fish the Toms. I haven't fished for about a year because of the persistent high water, my new job, and a recent broken ankle. Determined to get back at it in the Fall.

Derek always was and still is a very good guy! He definitely connected well with many of the old regulars on NJTrout, myself included. Denis F. gave him his first ever 'boo rod. I still tell stories of the time I took Derek for his first time ever fishing the lake O tribs with me for spring steelies. Conditions were tough but we had a blast anyway!

The Salmon R. was totally blown out from snow melt runoff. (that was the year they had 14 feet of snow in 6 days up there!) We ended up fishing many of the smaller tribs, which was a bit of a problem for Derek since he'd only brought an 11 ft. 7 wt rod. Working that long stick in such small, wooded creeks as Skinner, Lindsay, etc was a struggle but he did finally manage to land his first steely despite the difficulties.

Glad to hear he's finally getting 'back on the horse' and wetting a line!
