Final 2019 Trout and First on a New Rod

Post by Twism86 » Wed Jan 01, 2020 8:44 pm

Hi all,

With the temps on the 40s and the water up December 31st was a good day for the last trout of the year! With nothing going on during the day I headed to a nearby WTS to get the last out of my 2019 license.

I also wanted to take the chance to break in my new Ronbo bamboo rod. A friend and rod maker started one for me over the summer and it was finished just in time for Christmas. Needless to say I was itching to get it out in the water. I ended up landed a few small rainbows and brown on a hares ear. The fish were pretty active, still mostly down deep but caught a few in shallow riffles. Water saw slightly up and stained with was nice as well. The rod is a 6’6’’ 4wt Garisson taper. Enjoy some pics.

Congrats on the new rod and breaking the ice with it. I was out the day before, caught a few brookies and one brown, all on a wet fly.

Very nice rod, I really like the green wraps. Not familiar with that taper, though. I've heard of Ronbo bamboo rods, how was he to work with, and are you satisfied? How did you decide on the taper?

My first bamboo build was with pale green wraps and dark green tipping, blued hardware. I wrapped a Dickerson 7012 (I buy blanks, can't make them.) That rod is so sweet.

Oh, nice fishies, too. :D

Nice looking rod, Tom.

And I'm glad to see there are still fish in that stream :D Just be careful on that bridge; I believe there's only one handrail?

Nice rod and fish. I just picked up a Simroe 7.5" 3wt the other day. You will get to really like bamboo, especially on the small streams. It is good for most things with the exception of dredging nymphs on the bottom of large rivers, which is not my favorite type of fishing anyway.

He is friend of mine so I was able to pick the wrap color and agate insert. I left the reel seat up to him but if you want anything custom or specific he can do it.

I decided on the taper because I cast an identical rod, with my own reel and line, before. So I knew it would work with my equipment and what I wanted to do. Casts very well and is workable in close as well. I love it!

It’s a dangerous path.... well, expensive path! I love the rod so far. The looks and feel are unmatched by graphite. Fighting a fish is just awesome with the full flex these rods have also.
