Its actually just a gold color plug. It was a pictured I had loaded up on Imgur with that censored for respect for a angler that had introduced that to me & didnt want his lure blown up on the internet on another site. No secrets here since most here fly fish. As you can see. I use single barbless hook. NO TREBLES ;)
Thanks for sharing. Gold is a good color, i see so many different favorite colors that i just think they all work lol. The single hooks are good too, wish more manufacturers made em. For now just gotta replace em myself.
I started using single barbless hooks to prevent injuries to me & the fish. As wild trout is known to be acrobatic. Its a pita sometimes to get the trebles of the lure for replacement. But well worth it for the end results. Tight lines to you.

99% of these fly dudes wouldnt know what do if they bought in a 24 inch all wild brown like this. Oh I forget they never will because after a certain size most will no longer feed on flies they only feed on other smaller bait fish & crustaceans
Dude. Caught on a 16 caddis dry. In the dark.
Niceeeeeeee fish ;) ;) ;)

didnt you know, once a trout touches a soft plastic or a spinner blade, they instantly blow up. Therefore I use marabou jigs, they only explode 33% of the time :geek:
Where is the fun in that?!

Back to the main topic, I think the improved water levels we are seeing recently will help trout numbers.

That's one of the biggest wive's tales in all of the fishing world. I have landed more wild trout over 24" than I can even remember, and all on flies. Sometimes dry flies, sometimes nymphs (there, I said it), and sometime tossing meat (streamers). Don't believe for a minute that a big wild brown trout won't sip size 24 Trico spinners. Sure, they eat larger prey as well, but they never stop feeding on macros.

Agree with Rusty. I've caught many a 20+ inch trout including both rainbows and browns on flies including tiny ones.

Just a word on what flies .... Go look at the pictures of lahonton cutthroat throat on njfishing, those fish are like 10lbs , and what do they eat ? Flies .... You can catch a sailfish on flies .... To say a 24in brown wont eat flies ......well there are many reading this message board who can prove the opposite.

Fished many of years up in the W, Branch Upper Delaware in between fly fisherman. They tossing every kind of flies & streamers coming up empty for hours :( . I toss a plug in between them landing large wild browns all day :o . If larger trout 22 inch & ^ have a choice between MEAT or flies. 90% of the time they gonna go for the MEAT imo ;) . I just came from the Salmon River for Steelheads. Used plugs to them all day. Steel heads also fall for the plugs over flies imo. But to each their own. As long as you have fun thats all that counts. Tight lines fella's

Fly fishing is about much more than catching fish, and bragging about the size of them.

One of the old members of this board, Bill H, used to buy the crappiest equipment he could find. He wanted none of the advantages new or cutting-edge equipment could offer an angler; if he caught trout (and he usually did), it was all him.

Is there a big difference between cutting edge vs crap? I find some of the vintage spinning reels to be the same only that they click while reeling because of how anti reverse works, and a lower gear ratio.

What Joe said. Every fly angler knows he/she can catch more using spin gear. Every one of us. We choose fly fishing for the limitations it brings to fishing and trying to overcome those limitations.

For me, I'd rather kill a deer with my bow than with a rifle or slug gun. It's more of a challenge, and it's the challenge and not just the antlers and/or meat I hunt. Fooling a mature whitetail - buck or doe - into archery range and then drawing back (compound bow for me) and getting away with that draw back is what keeps me going in life. That and feeding a 30" wild brown trout a dry fly......

funny you say that. 1 of my vintage Mitchell's. Still works GREAT as the day I bought it ;). I use a Shimano Stella 1000 now. This was a pricey little sucka :o . Imo they perform almost as smooth as the ole timer does

That depends on the conditions..if there is a hatch going on and fish are on the bugs, not even power bait will catch them..well sometimes, but I guarantee, I will catch more on the bugs hatching than any spin set-up...everytime.
