Dry fly floatant
My Mom bought me a dry fly powder floatant for Christmas so I feel obligated to use it. However, I find it difficult to work with and not terribly effective. I think I prefer the silicone floatants. What's your preference?

And if you fish CDC tiemco dry fly magic dabbed on a little and then Frogs Fanny is way to go .

I have been using Cortland DAB silicone for decades.

If that is what you use, buy in bulk for a fraction of what you pay from the fly shops. This bottle will last you and your buddies a couple of lifetimes. It is nothing more than hydrophobic fumed silica.

Both powder and gel work. I prefer gel but my buddy prefers powder. All good. When I apply gel I do so to the top of the fly only. I feel it gives me a better presentation. By the way this has been a great year for dry fly fishing with little black stones. I have netted several fish using a lbs dry fly including yesterday.

Do any of you guys know William G. Tapply? Here's a great and funny vignette he wrote on the "dry-fly snob." You can read it here if you want. Fittingly, it's posted on Orvis' website :

hands down frogs fanny - use the untreated fly until it sinks - dust with frogs fanny and it float like a cork until you're next fish or you drown it.... don't use silicone and then try to dry with FF. doesn't work as well.
someone else mentioned on CDC its the only thing that works.

Guides out west use homemade concoctions... Mostly Lighter fluid and Abalene... I was skeptical but tried it and it works great. Fish don't care in the least about the smell. Dry it off with a few false casts and you are good. Better that anything else I have tried and I've tried them all.
Except for CDC flies ... just use the powder on that.

Flyagra...then if you need to, dust with frogs fanny.
Re: Dry fly floatant
Hi, One of the best floatants you can buy is at a drug store. It is Abolene that your mom put on your butt back in the 40’s or 50’s. Go to Walgreens or CVS and get the unscented. You can get a 14 ounce can for about 5 bucks and it will last you a life time. I started using it back in the 80’s. Just put a little in a small container that you can carry in your vest. Dab some on your fingers rub it on your fly , wings, top of fly,top of hackle and it will float like a cork. Before you use it after dabbing on your fly put the fly close to your mouth and exhale to let your warm breath blow onto your fly so the Abolene soaks into the fly. It will last all day. If you catch a fish or two just swish the fly in the water and false cast to dry off the fly and use it again. Just my two cents worth but it works, Bill the mailman

Loon's Payette Floatant for all but CDC and then Frog's Fanny for CDC flies.

I believe it was onemorecast that suggested fletch-dry for arrows. I bought some when I saw it and have been using it ever since. Nothing better for CDC.

Trust me...use Flyagra, you wont look back.
If you fly floats for more than four hours...seek medical attention.
Google this stuff. I was introduced to it on the Big Horn River during the black caddis hatch. They use cdc wing caddis. It makes them float forever. Tie it dip it dry it.
