C&R

I fished the KLG tonight. I arrived at 6:45 PM, the water temp was 68 degrees exactly. It's 85 tomorrow. Stay home until it cools off.
A place to discuss trout fishing in New Jersey and more!

I agree, it's time to carry your stream thermometer and give 'em a break on hot days. It's even too hot to bother to run up to the cold waters of the Catskills because hatches are always light on hot, sunny days.
I hear that! Last year I reconnected with a childhood buddy that had just taken up fly fishing. He was headed to the KLG the next day and wanted me to swing by and fish with him. I did walk down to find him, but sans fishing gear. He asked why I didn't plan to fish since he had the water all to himself and I explained the water temp thing to him. He had just never thought of that since he was so new to the sport, and he figured since he was a C&R angler that no fish would be harmed. He learned a good lesson that day, but it would be easy for an old-timer like me to see people practicing C&R when temps get over 70F and get pissed off. Sometimes they just don't know better.CheeseburgerFly wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 11:02 amMy favorite is when you run into people fishing at the Gorge during the hottest parts of the summer and they are excited to tell you what a great day of fishing they had.
Agreed, but I have also seen jerks start yelling at those anglers which is not helpful. Just have a polite conversation and inform them of the consequences of their actions and most will stop fishing on hot days. That said, another C&R practice I see in the Gorge and elsewhere in summer is guys that fish at 70F in the morning and justify that it "wasn't over 70" only to have that river warm up several more degrees on a hot day. That is just as bad as fishing in 72 degree water IMO.CheeseburgerFly wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 12:54 pmHaha - I hear you. It's not malicious by any means, it's just that people do not know any better.
Just bring some ice water to revive 'em. Works every time.Rusty Spinner wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 1:14 pmAgreed, but I have also seen jerks start yelling at those anglers which is not helpful. The WB is where I temporary live in the summer fishing for trout . Nothing below hales eddy for me ...Rusty Spinner wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 4:34 pmDon't count on that other than WB and upper EB. The Beaverkill is currently at 71.6F
I'll be up there tomorrow myself. Luckily, the entire 17 miles of the WBD below Cannonsville remains below 70F all year long, unlike the lower East.Troutman wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 6:50 pmThe WB is where I temporary live in the summer fishing for trout . Coffin flies not very important on the West. Green drakes prefer the East and upper mainstem over the West which has less silt. Drakes are burrowers. Storms already passed through up there. Flows jumping up, but not too bad it looks like.PortMurrayAng wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2020 8:02 pmTruer words... I just finished my 2nd sulphur. Going to tie coffin flies next, first try with these and I only have size 10 hooks.
