I agree, it's time to carry your stream thermometer and give 'em a break on hot days. It's even too hot to bother to run up to the cold waters of the Catskills because hatches are always light on hot, sunny days.
I hear that! Last year I reconnected with a childhood buddy that had just taken up fly fishing. He was headed to the KLG the next day and wanted me to swing by and fish with him. I did walk down to find him, but sans fishing gear. He asked why I didn't plan to fish since he had the water all to himself and I explained the water temp thing to him. He had just never thought of that since he was so new to the sport, and he figured since he was a C&R angler that no fish would be harmed. He learned a good lesson that day, but it would be easy for an old-timer like me to see people practicing C&R when temps get over 70F and get pissed off. Agreed, but I have also seen jerks start yelling at those anglers which is not helpful. Just have a polite conversation and inform them of the consequences of their actions and most will stop fishing on hot days. That said, another C&R practice I see in the Gorge and elsewhere in summer is guys that fish at 70F in the morning and justify that it "wasn't over 70" only to have that river warm up several more degrees on a hot day. Coffin flies not very important on the West. Green drakes prefer the East and upper mainstem over the West which has less silt. Drakes are burrowers. Storms already passed through up there.
