What color buggers do you like
What color buggers do you like
I was reading an article about fishing streamers and saw a picture of the writer's box. In his box he had purple and orange buggers, which I never have tried. I like Grizzly colored buggers best. Olive second.
What are your go to colors? Anything I should be trying?

Olive, black, brown, then white in that order. I think I use olive and black about 95% of the time, so brown and white are fairly unimportant to my streamer box although I have a few in both colors.

I fish them a lot, often that's what I'll start with if there are no bugs actively working or I have limited time and want to target predatory fish. I prefer darker olive or black. For me brown can be real good on some streams but suck on others same with purple. White I have but almost never use except on the big D.

I use olive and black mostly but I have used purple for salmon and steelhead successfully.

Re: What color buggers do you like
I use them a lot, almost exclusively olive. Black sometimes, I find white to be close to useless.
Re: What color buggers do you like
White all the way!

Real fishermen, don't use streamers...ever!!!! or mopflies, or egg patterns..
Re: What color buggers do you like
Buggers aren't streamers, they're buggers you can fish them to imitate large stonefly nymphs, leeches, crayfish. Streamers have feather wings!

Underbody: Lead wire, or politically correct substitute (as needed for stream conditions).
Body: Brown-olive yarn unraveled from a WW II vintage wool Army sleeping bag liner.
Tail: The maribou-like fuzzy fibers from the butt of a brown mottled pheasant body feather (aka butt fuzz)
Hackle: Brown-dyed grizzly hackle
Rib: Fine copper wire strand wound in the opposite direction from the hackle.
Head: Whip finish the copper wire used for the rib (if you're too inept, just use red tying thread).

Pattern references Woolly Wisdom (1999), Soucie[1]
The Woolly Bugger is an artificial fly commonly categorized as a wet fly or streamer and is fished under the water surface.
right!

I'll go with wet fly then!lightenup wrote: ↑Wed May 09, 2018 12:51 pm

Olive, black, brown and some combination of the two of them. I also use small white ones for wild brookies from time to tiem.
Re: What color buggers do you like
Every few years I tie a few buggers but have never caught a trout on one. I know that many anglers have a lot of success with them but since I have no confidence in the fly I use them, well, every few years for about an hour.
Re: What color buggers do you like
Black, olive, or a combination of the two. I like them early before the fish start looking up. (Great on bass, too)

Re: What color buggers do you like
I agree that having confidence in the fly you choose is critical, but if you put a gun to my head and said I only have one fly to use to catch trout anywhere the rest of my life, I would have to choose a size 8 bead head olive woolly bugger. And that is coming from this dry fly purist snob.

Agree - that is the one fly to have, and definitely with a bead. Would argue the best fly all around for all freshwater species.
Re: What color buggers do you like
What about style of WB? I like the way Tim Flager ties them (see link attached) but maybe with a conehead and a couple of strips of flash tied along the sides. I think the very full marabou tail is best unlike my preference for sparse tying on most flies.
