Water Temps
Water Temps
Why is there no water temp. information on the USGS reporting? It would seem to be something useful. to know.
Re: Water Temps
Gr8 question!!! But would it be reliable if it were there?
Re: Water Temps
A few years ago I remember there was at least one temperature monitor for a NJ river but the one I'm thinking about was discontinued due to lack of funding.

Re: Water Temps
They are too expensive to maintain without a supporting funder. I tried many times to have TU fund one for either the Musky or the SBR gauge but nobody seemed interested. Some stations do have them such as Spruce Run in Glen Gardner, the Pequannock at two sites, etc.

Re: Water Temps
That temp in GG goes up and down like a yo-yo . It reaches 70 long before the SBR but drops back to the low 60's at night. Looking at it recently you would think it isn't measuring water temps but air temps..It hit 92 yesterday. Maybe the Creek is too low and it is measuring air temps.Rusty Spinner wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 10:41 amThey are too expensive to maintain without a supporting funder. Re: Water Temps
On USGS you can customize the table. Below link shows Temperature as one of the columns, and you can see which gage has temperature recordings. I also included Gage height/streamflow.

Re: Water Temps
Yup, sounds like the temperature probe is sticking out or too close to the water's surface at that USGS gauge station. No chance that water is hitting 80 let along 92lightenup wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 11:57 amThat temp in GG goes up and down like a yo-yo . Re: Water Temps
The Potomac at Little Falls hit just over 90 yesterday evening! At that temp, its too warm to even fish for smallies! I dont know who maintains the temp guage, but I find it very useful when deciding when to target bass, shad, etc. Maryland seems to have more temperature guages as big rivers like the potomac have them as do tailwaters such as Little Hunting creek, Little Gunpowder, etc.

Here is a copy of the GG Spruce Run gauge temps....not very believable.

Just checked the USGS site for the SBR and there is a temperature graph! Is this new?

Re: Water Temps
Next week's overnight lows look like they'll be in the mid to low 60s while daytime highs will be lower 80s...I'd love to get out for a week in August if possible. Temps will tell!

Re: Water Temps
for quite a few years now August has been really fishable. My childhood memories, especially fb double sessions in hs, were pretty brutal August's.BiggerThomas wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2020 9:02 amNext week's overnight lows look like they'll be in the mid to low 60s while daytime highs will be lower 80s...I'd love to get out for a week in August if possible. Re: Water Temps
In addition to temps the SB now has assessment of chlorophyll and phycocyanin florescence and relative florescence. Does anybody know their usage? Chlorophyll I assume could be used to assess algae in the water however the phycocyanin I am unfamiliar with.
i am not familiar with.
