New Member: Euro Nymphing Equipment Advice

Hello everyone. This is my first post on this forum but the truth is I've been coming to it every now and then for almost 10 years. I mainly fish the gorge since I have about an hour drive to get to any trout water, as I am coming from southern middlesex county. I usually nymph with two flies and an indicator, using a 4 weight 8'6 Scott A3 rod I've have for years and a greys streamlite 4/5 clickpawl reel. The reel was upgraded to metal drag components after the plastic/composite components wore out.

After watching numerous youtube videos and tutorials I would like to begin euro nymphing. I have been doing some research on equipment and was curious what people on the forum are using. Should I be looking at 3 or 4 or 5 weight? I am targeting trout. Do I need a new reel? Should I get a new reel? Should I get a new spool and keep the same reel?

Budget $600-$800 for a complete outfit, $250-$500 for a rod.

TLDR: What do your euro nymphing outfits consist of for targeting NJ trout? (rod length and weight, line weight, reel size)

Thanks

Tommy

I would go with the 3 or 4 wt. 10.5 to 11ft. Get a reel to go with it and save on the reel but not with the rod. That way you can keep your existing outfit in tact and ge able to switch back and forth between indicator and Euro easily. I have a T and T but other good euro rods out there. You can by a cheaper running line instead of regular fly line as that is same as a Euro nymph line. Or just reverse a old weight foward 3 or 4 wt line and use that back end. Level line is good! Have fun and watch the trees.

I don't have euro gear , however I fish with friends that do. If you truly plan to euro nymph be sure to get a euro nymph rod. A 2 or 3 weight euro nymph rod is referring to the tip for sensitivity, the mid to butt is basically a six weight to help set the hook when fishing heavy bead euro nymph nymph rigs in deep fast water.

For a reel look at the $99.00 Echo Shadow clicker. For a rod consider the $300.00 Cortland Nymph series or the slightly more Syndicate Pipeline series.

Big thing now with euro rigs is a mono setup using mono line typically used by spey casters as the shooting line. The OPST running lines are popular.

New member also, but picked up Euro nymphing in the fall last year. I use the 11' 3-wt Syndicate Pipeline P2 with the the lightest Orvis Clearwater reel. Line is definitely of secondary importance, if you want a dedicated line you can consider something like the Orvis Tactical Nymph (I have one spool rigged with this), but you can also extend off of a standard line using something like the Scientific Anglers Euro Nymph Kit (I have another spool rigged with this). For Euro nymphing, leader setup might be more important than line. In fact, the reason for the two spools is each is equipped with slightly different leader setup. One spool is equipped with somewhat standard (thin but not very thin) Euro-nymph leader, while the other is equipped with a micro-thin Euro-nymph leader. I built both leaders myself, but there are also commercially available options. The micro-thin is more sensitive, but also more of a pain to cast. With both leaders, I tend to feel rather than see a take.

The 10ft or 10ft6 or 11ft rods are great for indicator fishing to , so don't think your locked into euro nymphing with those rods . I like the long soft euro rods for delicate dry fly fish as the protect the tippet better. I'm not really a euro guy , but I'd recommend Trout Bitten blog , anything George Daniels , Devin Olsen or New Jerseys own Aaron Jasper . Youtube is an incredible source as well .

Thank you everyone. I am thinking a 3 weight 10'6 to 11'. And I agree that I will be using this for indicator fishing as well.

. I picked up a t and t contact 2 over the winter. It is a 10' 3wt. I usually fish bamboo but when I have to really nymph they are not the right tool. That being said the one thing I read that stuck was if I was going to indicator nymph and possibly throw a dry if a hatch is on stick with the 10' rod. They are the most versatile. I honestly have not used the thing yet, lol, but just thought I would pass on what I was told.
