Wild brookies, snakes, and ticks

Post by martalus » Thu Jun 24, 2021 4:05 pm

Needed to clear my had today while at my parents so I made quick escape to the only wild brookie stream I know of in the township. I wanted to do thinks simple so I tied on an EHC on to a 6X tippet and off I went. I havent fished the stream since 2014 and it was very overgrown and difficult to get down to the stream. On my second cast on the first pool I landed a 10 + inch beauty. In the next pool I caught/LDRd 5 smaller brookies. Amazing that there were so many willing to hit a dry in the same small pool. I hiked up a little further to a pool in the power cut and was disturbed to see a snake wresting around with a wild brookie in his mouth. I wasnt sure if I should try to save him or to video it. In the end I did neither and let nature handle its own business. I did see a whole lot of little dace bait fish as well as many YOY and 2nd year brookies swimming around which encouraged me. After I hiked out through the high grass I was just covered in ticks. All in all a weird day but happy to see all the brookies.

But damn it was spooky to watch that water snake wrestle around with the five inch brookie in his mouth!

Nice fish--and photo!

Ya' gotta' get in that brush to fish those smaller waters...

I think I got lucky with that bigger brookies as all the other ones were less than 6 inches. I also took my daughter to a different stream for some wild browns-it was the first place my dad ever took us trout fishing at a similar age. Unfortunately he passed away this week-fortunately my daughter has kept his legacy alive with fishing, skiing and a sprirituality that thrives in the outdoors. Me and my dad each caught 16 plus inch wild browns in that pool within ten minutes a few years back.

Thanks Brian! I have to admit it has been tough. Supporting our mom the best we can.

I wish I could tell you it gets easier, but it doesn't. Cling to all the great memories you had together. My father is gone 14 years already.....
