2022 Fishing Digest

Post by cappy » Fri Jan 21, 2022 10:33 am

I just got a look at the 2022 digest. Looks like we are back to the pre-covid stocking protocol.

I think a hybrid plan with the stocking dates and old system but allow all waters to be catch and release from the period March 15-April 9. This can often expand the season by 2 weeks if the weather is nice and offer some nice fishing early season fishing. This probably would not piss off too many people and expand the season a bit.

Probably became a bit of an enforcement headache for them with regards to poaching. Great idea but since this is NJ, the A-hole minority ruins it for the rest of us law abiding citizens.

I do like the preseason catch and release but you see so many dead fish from people gut hooking fish with bait.

A good change would be artificial only during the preseason to hopefully see less dead fish.

some later May stockings will be good once the bugs really start going

I enjoyed the zero announcement stockings, and as far as i could tell there were some later stockings, but with no announcements of date and locations it didnt invite the crowds....it was a big improvement imho

In my (very) informal surveys of friends and anglers I meet along the way, I'd say at least 80% of us preferred the Covid stockings. I let that be known to the new Chief whom I consider a friend and colleague, but it doesn't look like I carry much weight these days.

I could tell about 30 seconds after driving by the 1st bridge pool if a stream was stocked that day or not. That said I still preferred the covid schedule but I think the casual fishermen won out on this one.

Now I can't fish for two weeks in the early spring...I kind of enjoyed being able to fish the stocked waters for C&R. I guess it's back to harassing wild fish during that period...

No kill stretches of stocked streams are open year round, and they hold wild trout...Just saying.

Yeah they also have every person trying to fish during that time period. All TCA turn into zoo's during that time

I'm glad to be back to the old schedule. The Pre-opener C&R was infested with guys using Power Cheese and treble hooks and ripping those out of deeply hooked fish, it was a blood bath on most streams. Add into that all the people not practicing C&R during the opener when 600,000 trout were dumped into streams in 2 weeks, read reports of guys catching 100 plus trout in a day.
If they really wanted to help the sport they should follow Pa. and have a 3 week C&R for children accompanied by an adult. In Pa. the kids can fish and not be bothered by drunks and surf rods throwing 2 ounce sinkers in densely populated holes. Also N.J. should not go by calendar year license but do what N.Y. does, your license is good for 365 days from the day of purchase.
