I think we all know how I voted.

JK, I typically nymph (when God forbid the trout aren't rising) with two flies. But sometimes, especially during a caddis hatch, I will fish three. I will use the knot between my leader and tippet to hang a long tag off to tie on an emerger style fly several feet above the pupa and maybe some candy below that, depending on conditions.

Typically two, however like Rusty will use three depending on conditions and size/depth of water.

Yeah, I swing wets much more often than I fish nymphs, but in both cases, it's always two flies. In part, that's because I now live in Maryland which limits the number of flies you can use to two, but I do the same when I'm fishing in NJ or PA, because I'm used to the teams. I wouldn't know what to add as a second dropper.

Good point in this post on states regulating how many flies can be used!

Do we know what states it can only be 2 flies

AFAIK, only Maryland. It goes across all tackle types: "only two hook units per line". That's flies, lures, bait hooks, ice jigs, whatever.

I believe that Oregon has a limit of only one fly in FF only waters.

I always fish one fly. I am not coordinated enough to fish more. I ALWAYS end up with a mess of tippet in knots...sometimes even with one fly.

Always nymph with one fly!! Unless ur a euro nymper i rarely see the benefit of more than one fly..then again, i rarely nymph...ive watched the water for over an hour waiting for a target....dry- dropper occasionally during ISO season.....

Two, but the second fly might not be a nymph.

I have fished so little in the last 8 years since my kids were born and when i can make it out it is going to be for dry fly fishing but when i do nymph it is with two flys. I even bought a 10' nymphing rod this year.
