Will be out in the am to chase some stockers not sure where yet. And then may go else where for the evening and see if any bugs are hatching
Re: who's fishing opening day ?
I typically go out to a local P&T stream late afternoon if not raining, and keep a few for the freezer. They don't make it through the warmer/hot months in this stream, so I have no concerns with keeping a few.

Re: who's fishing opening day ?
My TU chapter (RVTU) does an opening day shenanigans outing each year, and I will attend that on the Musky. We do an early breakfast and later on a lunch. At/by 8am, we stand shoulder to shoulder in one small pool to mimic Saxton Falls for first fish bragging rights. At 8, all flies are launched and we let the games begin.

It cracks me up how opening day crowds are all jammed into the same bridge holes. Walk downstream to the first pool and you will have half the pressure. Continue down to the second pool and you may have it all to yourself.

I'm one of those tradition guys so I'll be out, probably for 8am but not a total guarantee. Remembrances of Rivers Past.

Will be at a small Monmouth County stream for $hit$ and giggles at 8am, done by 10am......hate the crowds and prefer to fish the week after.
Re: who's fishing opening day ?
I go to the county park down the street and fish the stocked lake there, it's my tradition and the only time I fish with bait for trout. Plenty of time later in the season to hit the streams with the fly rod.

I fish a WTS during the day if i get out. That is what i have done for the last 20 years or so.
Re: who's fishing opening day ?
Any attempt a stocked stream this morning? If so how was the flow, and were there any fish?
Thinking most of the stockies wound up in the Delaware or Passaic rivers.

I pass streams driving to work, saw a lot of empty stringers walking around.
Re: who's fishing opening day ?
I don't think I've fished on opening day in 20 years but I live close to the South Branch in the Long Valley area and I drove by and noticed there wasn't a single person out so figured what the hell, lets give it a go. It was a waste of time. I threw a few cast but only fished for about 5 minutes. River has come down a lot since yesterday but was still really high...and moving swiftly. I know this section of the river very well and there was no way I was going to try to wade it. It was just way too dangerous. The high water in this section can come down pretty quick but I don't even think it will be fishable by tomorrow.

The Ramapo as of 7:45 PM is ripping at 1690 cfs. Will have to wait a few days before it will get down enough to fish and wade. The best is from 250cfs down to 150cfs. Flatbrook is still over 1000 cfs and the best is 200 cfs or lower. If you are going to wade be darn careful. Bill the mailman
Re: who's fishing opening day ?
There are definitely places on rivers that you can catch fish. But that will take skills like reading the water to know where they will be hanging out at. Most of the opening day warriors will have no clue thou
