fishing etiquette ?

Does it still exist ? . I extend it to kids that come into the area Im fishing as courtesy. As when I was young. Many of the ole timers always made room for me on opening day. My dad usually had to fend for himself for an open spot. Some of these ole timers made it really enjoyable for me

I totally agree and I do the same thing. When I used to fish competitively for bass, there was always the 50 yard rule amongst the anglers. People just need this thing we are lacking: COMMON SENSE.

There is none. Yes I will let the kids have a shot, of course. I have even walked away from rising fish for 2 teens who were so stunned they couldn't stop thanking me. No biggie. Other adults DGAF about you or me and will fish right on top of us. Iv'e seen it, called it out and was challenged to a fight more than once. I find it judicious to walk away. Fishing is not worth either getting my ass beaten or going to jail.

My rule has been pre-teen kids
. If you old enough to display a liscense. you no longer get that pass from me
I seen a younger adults bogart a few kids from a fishing spot that was productive for them. I was fishing with a few buddies @ the time 50 feet up river. My other buddy said sometime about it as he hates bullies. Guess it helps when your 6.4 Ft and was carrying his service weapon

This is why I fly fish. Zip a 5 weight fly line an inch from the offender's nose and he will always get the message.

There is no etiquette. Last time I fished the Gorge, I was casting to a lone riser in a very small run. As I was adjusting my line, a woman walked up to within 3 feet of the riser, and watched me cast. She had put the fish down, and didn't understand why I was so enraged. I walked away without words, shaking my head. She appeared amused. Yes, she was an angler with her rod in her hand.
Go figure.

I welcome the argument.....kids get a pass up to a certain age. They need to be taught and understand why we preach this. Adults, well if you jump on top of me to fish then we have an issue. I will say something quick and to the point.

Fish the fast water, 99% of anglers congregate in pools. I haven't fished the gorge in many years, but when I did i would run dry droppers through all the heavy pocket water and would do OK. The nice thing was people never fished that area. People would literally trip over each other in the know areas/pools.

You guys are funny
I do see poor etiquette at times when fishing. I typically know when someone is about to encroach and piss me off, so I often take a proactive approach and engage the angler in question. It typically gets them to alter their behavior. But I'm also not a hothead, and I will calmly move along if the angler is a jerk and fishes over the top of me anyway. Life is too short. But I did hook into a Russian once with my 9 weight Loomis and a Deceiver at the False Hook after he got way too close to my back-cast, but that's a story for another day.

Good basic common sense. Best part of that advice is asking which direction the other person is working... up or down. Then just go the other way. I dont head 50 yards ahead of them and "beat them to the new water". They were on the river first, that gives them right-of-way in my book. Either work the other direction, or get way behind them and slowly follow behind them at distance.
